Township Recognizes Local Government Month

The Board of Supervisors, Township staff, and local schools have teamed up to recognize April as Local Government Month in Middletown Township. Following the lead of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, which designates a week in April for local government appreciation, the Board passed a proclamation to acknowledge the impact municipal government has on communities. Local Government Month also promotes educating residents on the Township's role in the community.

Throughout the month of April, Township Manager Stephanie Teoli Kuhls and Community Relations Officer Melissa Robison are bringing Local Government Month to elementary schools. Second grade students attending the presentations learn about their communities, the functions of the Township, and how young people can get involved. Four local schools volunteer to participate in this program: Oliver Heckman, Herbert Hoover, Pearl S. Buck, and Albert Schweitzer Elementary Schools.

"We are very excited to bring Local Government Day to the schools," said Township Manager Stephanie Teoli Kuhls. "The students have fun while learning about their community and how they can help make Middletown a better place for everyone."

Road Improvement Program Approved

Middletown's fifteen-year Road Improvement Program rolls into its third year. On March 14, the Board of Supervisors authorized Township staff to advertise the bid to contractors. Since the program's beginning in 2014, almost $6 million have been invested to improve, repair, or rebuild 30 miles over 96 roads.

This year's program includes roads mostly located in the Ivystream, Green Valley, Oaklihurst Gables, and Parkland neighborhoods. Residents in these neighborhoods will see several improvements to the road quality and drainage as roads will be milled, repaved, and restriped. Below is the full list of roads to be improved in 2016:

Police Officer Retires

After 37 years of honorable service, Officer Paul Bingaman has retired from the Middletown Township Police Department. At a time prior to the computerized call centers seen today, he began his career as a dispatcher, taking 911 calls, tracking patrol vehicles, taking information, and handling walk in complaints.

Paul served as a patrolman for the past 33 years. He served as the firearms training officer and helped officers meet their yearly qualification requirements. He also assisted outside law enforcement agencies, such as the Bucks County Detectives, with firearms qualification. He helped the Police Department with community outreach as well, spending time helping local Boy Scouts. Officer Bingaman's dedicated service earned him a role in the Township Honor Guard.

"Paul is one of the nicest and most humble men you will ever meet," said Chief Joe Bartorilla. "He is one of the most respected officers we have because of his attitude and ability to get along with everyone. He is a huge loss for us and will be sorely missed. He has been a dedicated, hard-working officer and a great man."

Community Partners for Shredding Event

Inspire Federal Credit Union and Oxford Valley Mall have partnered with Middletown Township to bring residents the next shredding event. Shredding any paper with personal information, such as account numbers and social security numbers, is an important protection against identity theft. On May 7 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., bring up to two boxes of paper to the shredding trucks at the Oxford Valley Mall parking lot off the Woodbourne Road entrance.

The Township is very excited to include private business partners in this year's shredding events. The mall has provided the space, and Inspire Federal Credit Union has generously paid for the shredding trucks. The credit union has previously supported Middletown's Earth Day events, and after recently moving into the Township, they have an interest in community involvement. Inspire opened a Middletown branch in January and is eager to serve the community, said Brian Phillips of the relationship development team. Partnering with the Township helps them "provide more services for our new neighbors."
