Major Update to Township Zoning Codes

The Board of Supervisors had a busy meeting on June 6th, passing two ordinances aimed at protecting Middletown residents. First, they approved an amendment to the zoning ordinance that created a separate class for transient dwellings. These are homes that rent to several non-related adults and typically have a high turnover. No longer classified as family living environments, new transient dwellings will be restricted to the apartment/office, mobile home park, professional, and commercial zoning districts.

The ordinance also requires that all rental properties, including transient dwellings, register with the township and receive annual fire and safety inspections. This will ensure that houses are maintained properly and with an appropriate number of tenants, improving the safety of the residents in these homes as well as their neighbors.

No Solicitation List Ordinance

The June 6th meeting also saw the passage of an ordinance creating a No Solicitation List. Businesses and salespersons looking to solicit in the Township will receive a list of addresses they are prohibited from visiting.

The Board of Supervisors hopes that this ordinance will offer residents peace of mind that these unwanted visitors will not turn up at their front door. Any Township resident can register with the Police Department to be added to the No Solicitation List.

4th of July Parade

Middletown Township's fifth annual 4th of July Parade is less than a month away!

On Monday, July 4th, members of the Middletown community will begin marching from Veterans Memorial Park (700 Veterans Highway) at 9:00 a.m. and continue until they reach Twin Oaks Park on Trenton Road. The parade highlights a special group each year to acknowledge their contributions to the Middletown community. This year, the Township is proud to recognize educators for their hard work and important role in shaping the Township from one generation to the next.

Families and businesses are encouraged to join in! All in the community are welcome to don their patriotic clothing and decorate their bikes, strollers, etc., and march in the parade. For information on how you and your family or business can get involved, please visit the Parks and Recreation website page on the 4th of July Parade. Please join your neighbors in honoring local educators and celebrating Independence Day!

Paving Underway

The 2016 Road Improvement Program is officially underway! In March, the Board of Supervisors approved the proposed repaving plan to repair roads in several regions of the Township. The James D. Morrissey construction company won the bid to complete the work, and paving began at the beginning of this month.

For more details on the program and which roads will be repaved, please see the article in April's E-News.

Middletown at the Mall

Middletown at the Mall returned this month to a large crowd eager to learn about summer recreation programs and safety. On the evening of June 8th, members of the Township Parks and Recreation Department, Fire Marshal's Office, and Police Department were on hand to meet with residents from over 40 families at Oxford Valley Mall.

Residents in attendance had several activities to enjoy, including participating in "Anywhere Mini Golf." They also had the opportunity to register for summer recreation programs ahead of the June 10th deadline. Staff from the Fire Marshal's Office instructed on water safety through the Safe Kids program.

Middletown at the Mall will return on October 1st in time for Fire Prevention Month as the Township will highlight emergency services. We hope to see you there!

Swimming Pools and Stormwater Management

Summer weather inspires many residents to enjoy spending time at the nearest swimming pool. For those homeowners fortunate enough to have their own pool, it is important to remember that proper maintenance can protect the community's water supply.

Do not let water from the pool into the stormwater system. Storm drains feed directly into local creeks without being filtered, so any contaminants will be released into the environment. To better protect the environment and water supply, remember to follow these guidelines:
  • With permission from your local municipal authority, water can be discharged into the sanitary sewer system
  • Any chlorinated water should be discharged on land, specifically grass, where it will not run into a storm drain
  • Turn off any temperature control and stop adding chlorine before you drain a pool
  • Do not let any debris drain with the water. Let it settle and clean it out separately
Remember, it is illegal to dump water from pool filters into a stream, gutter, or storm drain. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection offers additional information about properly disposing of pool water, and the Environmental Protection Agency's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System is an additional resource on water pollution.
Narcan Training Event

On Monday, June 27th, Drug Addiction Overdoes Education, Inc., will offer a free training session on Narcan. Narcan is a nasal spray that can block the effects from opioids, especially during an overdose. Emergency responders, including the Middletown Township Police Department, use it to revive and improve the chance of survival of those suffering from a drug overdose.

The training will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Middletown Township Municipal Center. While the session is free, participants are required to register ahead of time by sending an email to [email protected]. A Narcan kit will be distributed to all participants.
