4th of July Parade!

The sixth annual Middletown Township 4th of July Parade is fast-approaching! On Tuesday, July 4th, join fellow community members in celebrating Independence Day with a march from Veterans Memorial Park (700 Veterans Highway) to Twin Oaks Park on Trenton Road. The parade will begin at 9 a.m.

Each year, the Parade Committee selects a group from the community to honor during the parade. This year, the Township is proud to recognize first responders for all they do to keep this community safe. Members of the Police Department, the local fire companies, and the Emergency Squad will all be present at the parade.

Families and businesses are all encouraged to participate in the parade! People from throughout the community will march in their patriotic clothing and decorated bicycles and strollers. For more information on how to watch or participate in the parade, please see the Parks and Recreation website. Please join us in celebrating our country and local first responders!

Road Construction Begins

Under Construction Sign
Construction for the 2017 Road Improvement Program will begin in July. Approved in March by the Board of Supervisors, the program will see 9 miles across 34 roads milled, repaved, and restriped. The roads will mainly be located in the Durham Ridge, Durham Chase, Durham Meadows, Langhorne Gables, and Hollybrooke neighborhoods. On May 1st, the contract to complete the work was awarded to James D. Morrissey, Inc.

There are several things residents should keep in mind as construction begins:
  • NO roads will be closed during construction
  • Residents will always be able to get in or out of their homes during construction with only very minor, infrequent delays
  • Do NOT park on the street when construction occurs
Check the Township website for updates on the construction schedule.
Coffee with a Cop

Coffee with a Cop returned on May 25th! In a joint effort with Langhorne Borough, the Middletown Township Police Department hosted residents at the Langhorne Coffee House. Residents braved a rainy day to meet the Police Officers and leaders who serve the community. The Department also brought the child fingerprint ID machine to provide this safety tool for families in attendance.

"Coffee with a Cop allows us to visit some our great community establishments, and to get out and meet and greet the public outside of the township building in a more relaxed, informal environment," said Chief Joe Bartorilla. "We are glad to encourage more open communication with the public and better connect with our citizens to hear their feedback. We are thankful for our gracious host and all who attended for making this a success."

If you missed this event, don't worry! Coffee with a Cop will return soon, possibly as soon as next month! Check the Police Department Facebook page for updates on this and other community outreach events.

Township Smoke Detector Program Saves Home
smoke detector of fire alarm in action

The Middletown Township Fire Marshal's Office teamed up with local fire companies and the American Red Cross for the Home Fire Campaign. Participants walk door-to-door in Township neighborhoods to explain the importance of fire safety and smoke detectors. Homeowners who do not already have smoke detectors have the option to have them installed on the spot. This campaign is very important to community safety, and its success has already been displayed in the Township.

On May 21st, the Parkland Fire Company was dispatched to a house fire on Poplar Street. The emergency responders were able to quickly find and put out the fire and prevent significant damage. The resident had called the fire company in time, and she was able to do so because a smoke detector, recently provided through the Home Fire Campaign, alerted her to the fire.

"The most important thing that fire prevention can do is prevent fires before they start," said Fire Marshal Jim McGuire. "Education programs like the Home Fire Campaign can prevent fires or keep them small." Speaking of the fire on Poplar Street, he added that "successfully saving most of the family's belongings was only possible because they had smoke detectors installed." If you do not have a smoke detector, please contact the Fire Marshal's Office at 215-750-3812.
Middletown at the Mall

Middletown at the Mall is back! Thank you to hundreds of residents who came out to the Middletown at the Mall Summer Expo on June 7th! The next installment of Middletown at the Mall will take place on September 23rd as the Township recognizes Public Safety Day.

Join local emergency services at the mall for a day of games, exhibits, and safety education! Attendees will get to see rescue demonstrations, practice safety drills, meet local firefighters, and see firetrucks up close. The Police Department will also be on hand, bringing the child fingerprint ID machine as well as vehicles to explore. There will be plenty of giveaways and games as well!

The Township is excited to continue the success of Middletown at the Mall. Stay tuned for additional details as we approach the fall. See you on September 23rd!

Board and Commission Vacancies

Looking to get involved in the Township? Middletown has several volunteer Boards and Commissions comprised of dedicated residents who wish to help the community. Each group specializes in different topics, such as land development, zoning, and environmental preservation. While most of these Boards and Commissions are currently full, there are two with openings.

The Community Beautification Committee implements programs and activities that create public awareness and eliminate trash, litter, and graffiti to keep the community clean. There is currently one vacancy on this Committee.

The Disabled Persons Advisory Board assists the Township in ensuring that public and private facilities comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. They also assist with issues or complaints to make sure that all residents have equal accessibility throughout the community. The Board has four openings.

Both of these groups offer a great opportunity to get involved and improve life in the community! For general information on Boards and Commissions or to apply for a position, please visit the Township website.

Preventing Stormwater Contamination

Summer is here, and everyone has a favorite way to cool off and relax. Many like to spend time at a local swimming pool. For those who are fortunate enough to have their own pool, it is important to remember that proper care and maintenance is essential to protect the community from contaminated water. Please remember the following guidelines to keep pool water away from the water supply:
  • Discharge any chlorinated water on grass - this will prevent it from running into a storm drain
  • While you MUST obtain permission from your local water authority first, pool water can sometimes be discharged into a sanitary sewer system
  • Stop adding chlorine and turn off any temperature control systems before draining a pool
  • Do not let debris drain with the water - instead let it settle and clean it out separately
All of these measures are to prevent water, debris, and other contaminants from running into the stormwater system. Water entering a storm drain will run into creeks without being filtered, potentially spreading harmful substances to the environment and water supply.

Don't forget, it is ILLEGAL to dump water from pool filters into a stream, gutter, or storm drain. See information from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to learn more about proper disposal of pool water. The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System from the Environmental Protection Agency offers additional information on water pollution.
