Middletown at the Mall Reinvisioned

Middletown at the Mall returns in its reimagined form in 2016! Township staff will host three major events at the Oxford Valley Mall, offering chances for residents to get a look behind the scenes of Middletown Township.

The first event, "Touch a Truck," will be held on Satruday, April 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Residents and children can come to the parking lot outside the Food Court to get an up-close look at fire trucks, snow plows, and police vehicles while meeting Township staff and officials.

Future events include a summer programs and safety event in June and a fire safety and emergency management event in October.

Middletown Township looks forward to meeting you at the Mall!

Zika Virus Information

Word Zika written across a Stop Sign
As the global medical community focuses on the Zika virus, many Middletown residents wish to know if they face any risks locally. There are several important things to understand about the virus:
  • The virus is most prevalent in tropical environments
  • It is spread through mosquito bites
  • The type of mosquito which carries the virus is NOT found in this region
  • The virus may be linked to birth defects in the brain
  • So far, no cases have been originated in the US
The Bucks County Health Department is preparing for any potential spread in this area. Since the spread of the West Nile virus, the County regularly traps and tests mosquitoes for viral threats. While no evidence of the virus has been found, the Health Department has plans to manage mosquito populations if needed. They recommend the following for your safety:
  • Use an Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellant
  • Make sure to use an air conditioner or window screens to keep mosquitoes outside
  • Avoid areas of stagnant water
  • If you visited a country where the virus was present, you can get tested at St. Mary's Medical Center
For additional information on the virus, please see the page from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Potholes

As spring approaches and the winter weather (hopefully!) fades away, you may notice potholes and other road damage left by storms. While the weather is still cold, the Public Works Department can apply a cold patch to temporarily fill the holes. As the temperature rises and cars drive over them, these patches slowly come undone, exposing the original pothole. Once the winter weather is fully behind us, Public Works can begin paving to permanently repair these roadway issues.

Please recognize that the Public Works Department can only fix the potholes they are aware of. If you see a pothole or other damage to a Township road, please call Public Works at 215-750-3800 to report the problem.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is responsible for repairs on state roads. A list of state roads within Middletown Township can be found on the Township website. For issues on any of these roads, please call PennDOT at 1-800-FIX-ROAD.

Thank you for your help in keeping Middletown roadways safe!

Heckman Students Give to the Community

Young Township residents have gone well-above and beyond the call of duty in helping their community. On Friday, March 4, students at Oliver Heckman Elementary School, along with the principal, parents and teachers, delivered stuffed animals to the Middletown Township Police Department (MTPD). The Police use these as a means of comfort for children who were involved in a traffic accident or other police situation.

The whole school impressively rallied behind this project, delivering hundreds of stuffed animals. One kindergartner in particular made an extra effort to help out. Parker VanWert created a flyer to solicit monetary donations while his father pledged to match each of his donations dollar for dollar. In total, Parker raised enough funds to purchase 120 stuffed animals to benefit other Middletown children. The MTPD and Middletown community thanks and commends Parker for his extraordinary efforts, and the Police Department will proudly present him with a Good Citizenship Award.

"What Parker did was amazing when you consider that he's a kindergarten student," said Police Chief Joe Bartorilla. "It speaks volumes about how he's being raised and what a great role model his dad is. What all these students did shows how powerful an influence a small neighborhood school like Heckman with dedicated teachers can be on children and the community as a whole."
