Major Streetlight Upgrade

Middletown's streetlights are about to become much more energy efficient. The Township embarked on a project that will convert nearly 3,000 existing lights to light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures. LED streetlights are typically brighter and offer several advantages to the community.

Current lighting fixtures use a lot of energy and have an average life of only five years before the need to be replaced. The LEDs are expected to last four times as long while using less than half the electricity. The conversion is projected to save the Township more than $1.5 million over 20 years in PECO energy bills alone. Maintenance savings from purchasing replacement fixtures may be equally high.

Middletown is not alone in making these upgrades. The Township has joined more than forty other nearby municipalities in this large-scale project, organized by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, called the Regional Streetlight Procurement Program (RSLPP). Participating in the RSLPP offers advantages beyond what is already gained through converting to LED fixtures. The Township has access to bulk purchasing rates and low-interest financing. This allows the project, which will cost approximately $1 million, to be paid off over time with the money saved from lower energy and maintenance costs. The vendor for the project, Johnson Controls, Inc. (JCI), will also provide the Township with an electronic database to include details and GPS locations for every streetlight fixture in Middletown. Middletown was also selected as the pilot location for all Bucks County communities participating in the RSLPP, meaning that a few Township roads will get an early preview of what the new fixtures will look like.

LED installation is scheduled to begin this summer.

Police Bike Patrol

Officers Andrew Herman and Kevin Platenecky
The Middletown Township Police Department (MTPD) is excited to promote its new bike patrol unit. Some officers now ride their new Cannondale Enforcer 2 mountain bikes throughout the community.

A key goal of the bike patrol is to better connect MTPD officers with the people they serve. Rather than sitting in cars, members of this unit will ride their bicycles out in the community to provide a visible, approachable presence among residents. They will easily be able to interact with the public as they patrol and respond to issues in neighborhoods, parks, and shopping centers. The MTPD believes they will be a valuable asset to the community and promote engagement between residents and officers.

Spring Valley Farm Meeting

The Parks and Recreation Department will host its next Spring Valley Farm Master Plan public meeting on Monday, May 23, at 7 p.m. in the Public Hall of the Municipal Center.

The Spring Valley Farm is a 10 acre property on Walnut Avenue in Langhorne that was purchased by the Township in 2013. It is part of a large, historic property that dates back to the late 1600s. The Parks and Recreation Department seeks to use the property to connect residents to nature and environmental programs.

The Township wants continued public input on the future of this property. In February, Parks and Recreation hosted a public meeting where residents offered their thoughts to the Spring Valley Farm Study Committee and consultants working the plan: a landscape architect and a park planner. The consultants have considered requests made and concerns raised at the winter meeting, and they have come up with potential plans to address the public feedback. On May 23, they will welcome residents' input on these options before completing the master site plan.

Tennis Courts to be Repaired

Firefighters' Park's three tennis courts are set for major repairs and upgrades. The Board of Supervisors recently approved a plan from the Parks and Recreation Department to repair 300 feet of cracks and to resurface the courts. The courts currently are uneven, but the repairs will level them to remove the bumps and dips in the playing surface. The nets and poles will also be replaced.

Firefighters' Park is a 13.2 acre park on Poplar Street. In addition to the tennis courts, it also features basketball courts, baseball/softball fields, picnic benches, and a playground. Additional upgrades to the park may be considered pending the award of a grant from the state.

Recycling Hazardous Material

Did you know that many household items contain chemicals that can harm the environment? Cleaning products, pesticides, weed killers, car batteries, solvents, and oil-based paints are among the common items that can add toxic material to the water, air, and soil.
Please do NOT place such items in the trash. Not only can the toxins get into the environment, they also pose a health threat to sanitation workers and can cause fires in trash collection vehicles. Pouring them into a sink or storm drain introduces harmful chemicals to the local water supply.

To dispose of these harmful items and substances, residents are encouraged to attend one of the Bucks County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events. The first event will be held at Harry S. Truman High School on May 28. Additional events will be held throughout the county running through August. For a complete list of events and items you can bring, please see the County's flyer.

Touch-A-Truck Rescheduled

Middletown at the Mall's Touch-a-Truck has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families are encouraged to visit the Oxford Valley Mall parking lot near the food court to get an up-close look at vehicles used by the Township, including police cars, snow plows, a fire truck, and more.

The event, previously scheduled in April, was postponed due to a snow storm. The Township is excited that a new date was found and that the Oxford Valley Mall continues to partner with Middletown to offer events to the community.
