Middletown at the Mall Returns!

Middletown at the Mall returns next month for a Summer Expo! Join us on Wednesday, June 7th, at Oxford Valley Mall from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a fun family event featuring staff from Middletown's Summer Recreation.

Recreation staff members will have games for kids and offer them a chance to get to know their future camp counselors. The Police Department and Bucks County Safe Kids will be on hand to educate families on important summer safety information. Attendees will also have a chance to win raffles for several local amusement parks!

In addition to these fun activities, parents will also have a chance to register their children for Summer Recreation and other programs and meet the staff who will work with their children throughout the summer.

Middletown at the Mall will take place on the first floor right in front of Sears. We hope to see you there!

Dogs Visit Neshaminy Students

Students in the Neshaminy School District have recently enjoyed some new additions to their education team: Bubbles and Jari! Bubbles and Jari are therapy dogs that accompany Animal Control Officer Katie Brennan on visits to schools. During each visit, students spend time reading their original stories to the dogs as well as spending individual time with them for comfort and support. The program aims to provide the students with valuable lessons about compassion and empathy while providing a fun outlet for them during the day.

So far, Brennan and her dogs have visited Maple Point Middle School and Herbert Hoover Elementary School. "It has been exciting visiting these students and watching their confidence grow in reading and writing," said Brennan as she spoke enthusiastically about the program's success. "Bubbles, Jari, and I look forward to continuing this opportunity in the future."

Code Enforcement Reminder - Bamboo

An important reminder for residents: the Township passed an Ordinance in 2015 strictly regulating bamboo. No one in the Township may grow bamboo on any property within Middletown. Residents or businesses with existing bamboo on their property must maintain and trim it so that no part of the plant is within 10 feet of the property line. Anyone wishing to grow bamboo must obtain a permit from the Building and Zoning Department and adhere to the guidelines set forth in the Ordinance. Any who violate these regulations may be subject to a fine of up to $1,000 for every day they are found in violation.
Safety Around the Grill

Spring is a great time of year for outdoor activities, and many of us enjoy firing up the grill for a barbeque. To keep the fun going throughout the warmer seasons, please be responsible and safe when using a propane or gas grill. Middletown Township's Fire Marshal recommends that you do the following when using a grill:
  • Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, and keep the manual readily accessible
  • Only use the grill outdoors in a well-ventilated area
  • Make sure the gas is shut off and the grill has cooled before covering it
  • Make sure there are not sharp bends in the hose or tubing
  • Keep a gas hose away from any hot surfaces and dripping grease
The Fire Marshal also wishes to remind you NOT to do the following:
  • Do not smoke while handling a propane cylinder
  • Do not use matches or lighters to check for leaks
  • Do not use, store, or transport a cylinder where it can be exposed to heat, including near or under the grill
The Fire Marshal's website has a full list of important recommendations to ensure that you have a fun and safe time at your barbeques and picnics this year.
Hazardous Waste Collection

Bucks County will host several hazardous waste collection events throughout the spring and summer. Household products that include toxic chemicals such as pesticides, oil-based paints, cleaning products, weed killers, and automotive batteries can cause serious harm to people and the environment if they are not discarded properly. Never throw such items in the trash or dump them in a sink, as this would lead to fires or contamination of the ground, air, and drinking water.

These collection events offer residents a safe way to dispose of harmful materials. Below is the schedule for all five events, two of which take place in Lower Bucks. All events are rain or shine and run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
  • May 22, Harry S. Truman High School, 3001 Green Lane, Levittown
  • June 17, Upper Bucks Area Vocational Technical School, 3115 Ridge Road, Bedminster
  • July 22, Central Bucks High School South, 1100 Folly Road, Warrington
  • August 5, Strayer Middle School,  1200 Ronald Reagan Drive, Quakertown
  • August 26, Bucks County Technical High School, 610 Wistar Road, Fairless Hills
Please note that electronics will NOT be taken at these events. For more information, please visit the Bucks County website page on recycling.
Dog Licenses
beagle_puppy_closeup.jpg

Pennsylvania Law requires that all dogs three months or older are licensed by January 1st of each year. Licenses help support animal control and make it much easier to return a lost or missing dog.

Dog wardens from the Pennsylvania Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement randomly canvass neighborhoods to ensure that all dogs are licensed and issue fines to those violating this law. Fines can be as much as $300 per violation in addition to court costs.

Dog licenses are available from the Bucks County Treasurer's Office. Annual and lifetime licenses can be purchased for $8.50 and $51.50, respectively. Those prices are discounted to $6.50 and $31.50 if the dog is spayed or neutered. Additional discounts are also available to those who are older or have a disability.

Tree Planting

Just in time for Earth Day, the Middletown Township Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) completed its spring tree planting event last month. Volunteers set out to plant several trees in Veterans Memorial Park, and additional trees were added throughout the community.

The EAC plants trees throughout Middletown twice each year, in the spring and fall. They acquire trees through Pennsylvania Treevitalize, a Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natura Resources program aimed to restore tree cover in communities throughout the state. The EAC typically plants between 50 and 100 trees per year to improve the health and quality of the local environment.

Summer Recreation Registration

Registration for Summer Recreation is still open! Summer Recreation is for elementary- and middle school-aged children and runs from June 19th through August 11th. The camp includes outdoor activities, field trips, and many other exciting activities.

In addition to the Middletown at the Mall event above, residents may register their children for this summer camp program by visiting the Parks and Recreation website or calling 215-750-3890. Registration will remain open until June 10th or when all programs are full, so register quickly!
