Middletown at the Mall Returns!

Middletown at the Mall returns on Wednesday, June 6th, for a Summer Expo! Join Parks and Recreation and other Township staff for a fun evening at the Oxford Valley Mall!

The Summer Expo is a great opportunity for Summer Recreation campers and parents to meet the counselors. Parents can take care of forms and get questions answered, and the campers get to meet their counselors while playing games and participating in activities. Families will also get to meet members of the Police Department who also share safety tips for spending time outdoors. Kids will be able to win prizes by playing safety games!

The Summer Expo will take place in the Sears Court from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. We hope to see you there!
Important Recycling Reminder

Recycling is an important part of keeping our community clean and sustainable. Pennsylvania law requires that residents recycle, and the community counts on everyone to place the correct items into recycling containers. Contamination by non-recyclable items can both increase the cost of recycling and turn an entire load into trash. Please remember the following "do's" and "don'ts" of recycling:
  • DO recycle all empty bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard
  • DO keep foods and liquids out of recycling
  • DON'T bag recyclables - plastic bags get tangled in the machinery
  • DON'T include food soiled items, such as a greasy pizza box
  • DON'T include any sharp, dangerous, or electronic materials
  • DON'T include bulky items like construction debris and DON'T add items like hoses and wires that can tangle and shut down recycling machinery
Police Memorial Week

The Board of Supervisors declared the week of May 13th Police Memorial Week, and the Middletown Township Police Department is proud to participate in this nationally recognized event! Members of the Police Department's Motor Unit and Honor Guard traveled to Washington D.C. from May 10th through 15th to participate in ceremonies and events with police departments from across the United States. During that time, they escorted families of fallen officers to the events while participating in a candlelight vigil and the Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial Day Service.

Also as part of Police Memorial Week, Middletown Officer Megan Freer participated in a bicycle tour that raised money for police memorials survivors programs. The trip spanned 250 miles from New Jersey to Washington D.C., where she met up with her fellow officers in the capital city for the week's event.

County Police Memorial Day services were held on May 21st. Each community who has lost an officer in the line of duty hosted a service, and a county-wide ceremony was held in the evening at St. Andrew's Church in Newtown.

The Middletown Township Police Department is proud of the work its officers put in to honor and assist fallen officers and their families.

Spring Cleaning Safety Tips

With spring comes spring cleaning, and Middletown Township wants residents to be safe as they clean up around their homes. The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management offers several tips to improve the safety of your home and family while straightening up around the house.
  • Ensure that nothing is stored too close to heating appliances and air vents
  • Check for water leaks, especially close to electrical appliances
  • Remove and recycle stacks of paper
  • Make sure you have working flashlights and smoke detectors
  • Make sure that your street numbers are clearly posted and visible so emergency vehicles can find you when needed
  • Dispose of any empty paint cans or containers of other flammable substances
Dispose of any oily rags - do not save them for later use as they can become flammable
Department Spotlight - Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management

This eNews series highlights Township departments and the volunteer boards and commissions that serve the community. In this issue, we will provide a spotlight on the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management.

This Township department's mission is to keep the community safe from fires, hazards, natural disasters, and many potential threats to public safety. While their purpose seems straightforward, their important work takes on many forms. Every business in the Township is inspected by Fire Marshal staff and made aware of any code or safety violations that put their customers at risk. These become especially important for the larger properties in the community, such as the mall, Sesame Place, and apartment complexes. The Office of the Fire Marshal is also responsible for education programs that include disaster preparedness, school fire drills, and fire prevention/safety exhibits and demonstrations at events and throughout the community. Additionally, they provide support to the local fire companies. The same staff are responsible for Emergency Management, often coordinating relief during storms and helping ensure everyone's safety at large events.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management is headed by Jim McGuire. Jim joined the Township as a part-time employee in 2001, and he has been the full-time Fire Marshal for over ten years. He first joined the fire service in 1988 and became a paramedic in 1992. From 1995 to 2003, he served the Philadelphia Fire Department. Throughout his career, Jim has also taken on more specialized tasks, serving on both the PA Incident Management Team and the Federal Urban Search and Rescue Team. He also has had several deployments to disaster areas throughout the United States and, most recently, Puerto Rico after last year's hurricanes.

The rest of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management team includes Scott Hoagland, James Bampfield, Alan Welsh, Colby Fisher, and Shane Quinnan. As a group, they complete the important work mentioned above to keep the community safe. Additionally, many of them bring experience as volunteer firefighters to help residents in times of need.

Residents of all ages have benefited from the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management, and the Township is very proud of the work they do to keep the community safe.
