Transportation Update
Traffic lights over blue sky. Green light
Your daily commute may soon become easier. The Board of Supervisors recently reviewed projects that will greatly improve the transportation infrastructure of the Township. The two key improvements, discussed at the September 19th public meeting by traffic engineer Phil Wursta of Traffic Planning and Design, will take advantage of state grant  and federal funds to improve the flow of traffic in some of the busiest parts of Middletown.

One project will update the traffic signals on Business Route 1 from I-95 to Oxford Valley Road. The Township will install a Traffic Adaptive System which facilitates a smooth flow of traffic. Currently, traffic lights are programmed to change at timed intervals. This new system will use cameras and an advanced software program to view and analyze traffic patterns, changing traffic signals based on the volume of vehicles traveling along the road. For example, if the cameras detect heavy traffic moving through an intersection, the traffic signals further up the road will change to allow the vehicles to pass. This system will greatly reduce traffic congestion and allow the signals to adapt in the event of unusually high traffic volume. To aid funding this project, the Township has secured a grant through the state's Green Light Go program which uses money from red light cameras to fund transportation projects.

The Township will also use funds from the Transportation Improvement Program to upgrade the Langhorne-Yardley Road intersections with Woodbourne Road and Bridgetown Pike. Currently, traffic at the intersection with Woodbourne Road frequently backs up if even one vehicle is waiting to make a left turn. The narrow intersection makes it difficult for traffic to pass through, often causing significant delays to commuters. It also poses a safety risk as motorists try to slip around a turning vehicle to get through the angled intersection. The proposed project will see a widening of the intersection and left turn lanes added in all directions. The added turn lanes and realignment of the intersection will allow vehicles to easily pass straight through the intersection even as others wait to make left turns.

The Bridgetown Pike intersection currently features a very sharp turn on a steep hill. This causes frequent delays as vehicles try to turn left onto Bridgetown Pike. The angle and gradient of the turn onto Langhorne-Yardley Road causes significant visibility issues. This intersection will be moved and reconfigured so that the two roads no longer meet on such an angle. Two different configurations are under consideration.

The Traffic Adaptive System is expected to be installed in 2017, and Langhorne-Yardley Road intersection improvements may begin as soon as 2018.

Shredding Event

Middletown Township is excited to once again partner with Inspire Federal Credit Union and the Oxford Valley Mall to bring Shred Day to the community! On October 8th from 9 a.m. to noon, shredding trucks will be stationed in the Mall parking lot at the old Strawbridge's entrance, and residents may bring up to three boxes of paper to be shredded.

Many papers contain personal, identifying information such as account numbers, passwords, and social security numbers that are in danger of falling into the wrong hands. Some criminals seek out this information for fraudulent purposes, such as making purchases with your accounts. Shredding these papers instead of simply recycling them is a key step in protecting your identity and assets. Shredding paper yourself can be time consuming, however, so this event offers a great opportunity to save time while protecting yourself from identity theft!

Safety Day

Middletown at the Mall returns on October 1st for its final installment of 2016: Public Safety Day! Join local emergency services at the Oxford Valley Food Court, both inside and outside, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a fun-filled day of games, information, and demonstrations.

October is Fire Prevention Month, which promotes safety, prevention, and preparedness awareness. In recognition of the importance of public safety, Middletown at the Mall will heavily feature local fire companies and emergency management.

Families in attendance will have opportunities to meet local firefighters and get an up-close look at their firetrucks. They can also view and participate in several activities and demonstrations. These will include opportunities to practice how to crawl through smoke and exit a home during a fire, use fire extinguishers, and prepare emergency plans. The fire departments will also show demonstrations of auto rescues and crashed tanker trucks.

The Police Department will also be on hand to promote public safety. Officers will provide safety information to families while offering fingerprint kits to children. The bike patrol will also be present, and attendees will be able to explore the police vehicles that are present.

This community event offers a chance to learn how to stay safe while having fun with the family! We hope to see you there!

Development Update

Businesses and developers are currently working on many projects that may bring exciting changes throughout the community. Some are just in their earliest stages, with initial plans recently submitted for review. Others, however, are currently underway or about to break ground in the very near future. The following is a list of projects that will commence this year:

1. Chick-fil-A in Lincoln Plaza in Langhorne is constructing a 548-square-foot expansion of its kitchen facilities, and the restaurant is currently closed while these renovations take place

2. Nordstrom Rack will open in October at Lincoln Plaza and is set to join the stores at 2424 East Lincoln Highway after completely renovating the 26,366 square foot place formerly occupied by Lazy Boy Furniture

3. Carmax will soon break ground on a 17,495-square-foot facility at the former location of K-Mart, 1776 East Lincoln Highway

4. A Starbucks (with drive-through) and an AT&T Store will be added to the Langhorne Square Shopping Center. Beginning later this year, the development company Waterstone Retail will construct a new building at 1501 East Lincoln Highway to contain the 1,850 square foot Starbucks and the 1,500 square foot cellular retail store

National Preparedness Month

Every September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designates September as National Preparedness Month. This year's theme expands upon the 2015 theme of "Don't Wait. Communicate," which highlights the need to communicate with your family and prepare before an emergency strikes. The 2016 focus adds emphasis on helping the members of the community most in need during emergency situations. In support of the national awareness campaign, the Board of Supervisors has proclaimed September as Emergency Preparedness Month to promote readiness among Middletown residents. FEMA and Middletown Township's Office of the Fire Marshal recommend key essential steps for your family to take before an emergency occurs:
  1. Create an emergency supply kit - assemble the supplies your family would need, including food, water, and medication, if you needed to last up to 72 hours before help arrived
  2. Create a plan - make sure all members of the family know where to go and how they will communicate in the event of an emergency, and consider if any members of the family will need extra assistance based on age or disability
  3. Keep informed about potential emergencies - follow news agencies and observe updates provided by FEMA on Twitter, Facebook, and their mobile app

Trash and Recycling Containers

The Township has received reports that many residents currently use containers that do not comply with the Township's ordinance on trash and recycling. Containers may not be larger than 35 gallons. They must have handles and a removable lid, and they must also weigh no more than 50 pounds when full. All recycling containers should be marked with a recycling sticker that can be picked up for free at the Municipal Center. Please note that containers larger than 35 gallons and toter-type containers on wheels with attached lids are NOT permitted. Failure to use a compliant container may result in your trash or recycling not being picked up!
What Can Be Recycled?

As Township staff field calls from residents every day, one question arises more often than most: what items can be recycled? Recycling is mandatory according to state law and Middletown ordinance to help protect the environment. The recycling program is single-stream, meaning all recyclables can be placed in one container. Only the following items may be recycled:

Magazines, Office Paper, Brown Paper Bags, Newspapers, Paperboard, Cereal Box Cardboard, Dairy and Juice Containers, Corrugated Cardboard (no larger than 2' x 2' squares), Junk Mail, Phone Books, Glass Bottles and Jars, Plastic Bottles and Containers (Recycle Types 1 through 7), Aluminum, Tin and Steel Cans

Hazardous materials and electronics may NOT be placed with recycling. An electronic waste recycling event will be held on October 8th from 9 a.m. to noon at the Lower Makefield Corporate Center, 790 Township Line Road, Lower Makefield. Most items can be recycled for free, but some televisions and monitors require a cash only payment of $25. For more information, call 877-328-2927.

For more information about the recycling program and how to dispose of electronics or hazardous materials, please visit the Township website.
