Holiday Season Safety

snowman-family.jpg Middletown Township wishes the community and all local businesses a safe and happy holiday season. While this time of year brings the excitement of shoppers eagerly seeking goods and services to purchase for their loved ones, the Police Department and Fire Marshal's Office want to remind all businesses of how to avoid certain risks and safety concerns.

Some businesses have recently reported burglaries when taking money to deposit in the bank. It is very important that no one transports the money alone. Additionally, the Police Department recommends that owners and managers limit how much money they keep in their safe, and do not tell employees how much money is stored. This can protect both your assets and employees from harm in the event of a burglary attempt. Lastly, when transporting money, place the bank bag in another bag or container to conceal what you are carrying.

Businesses, especially retailers, must be careful to avoid using areas near emergency exits for storage. The Fire Marshal's Office found several recent violations of this nature that can endanger customers and employees in the event of an emergency. Citations will continue to be issued when such violations are found.

Another concern is fraudulent purchases. In some instances, most notably at jewelry stores or others who sell expensive items, individuals have claimed they misplaced their store credit cards. They produce a falsified identification to convince stores to complete a sale.  It is important to ask for a second form of identification in these instances, and do not make sales that seem suspicious.

Please enjoy a safe and happy holiday season!

The Township has several important reminders for businesses in the community. The following information includes questions frequently asked by businesses or concerns often reported during inspections.

All businesses must have a permit to build a sign. You can find the permit application here. The cost of the permit is based on the size of the sign, as noted in the Fee Schedule found on the Building and Zoning Department website. Please note that you must also re-register your sign annually.

All businesses must obtain a Use and Occupancy Permit when moving into a location in Middletown. This permit registers your business with the Township. Additional information can be found on the same website linked above.
