2017 Road Improvement Program

Road Construction Ahead sign with numerous barricades
The 2017 Road Improvement Program was officially approved at the March 6th Board of Supervisors meeting. The repaving is part of the Township's long-term improvement plan to regularly maintain roads before they fall into a state of disrepair. Since the road program's start in 2014, the Township has invested $7.4 million to repair or rebuild 39 miles over 138 roads.

This year, the selected roads are mostly located in Durham Ridge, Durham Chase, Durham Meadows, Langhorne Gables, and Hollybrooke. They will total 9 miles over 34 roads that will be milled, repaved, and restriped. A bid for contractors will be advertised this month. Construction is expected to begin this spring and run through the summer. Below is the full list of roads to be improved in 2017:

Village Road; Vine Way; Java Lane; Lipton Lane; Claymont Avenue; Clay Avenue; Adams Avenue; Birch Avenue; Buttonwood Avenue; Cypress Avenue; Elisa Lynn Way; Fernwood Avenue; Fir Avenue; Flame Drive; Harrison Avenue; Jefferson Avenue; Lincoln Road (East and West); Linden Avenue; Line Avenue; Longview Avenue; Madison Avenue; Monroe Avenue; Parkview Avenue; Quincy Avenue; Washington Avenue; Willow Avenue; Frosty Hollow Road; Tina Drive; Green Meadow Drive; Carmen Lane; Hollybrooke Drive (and parking areas); Bridle Lane; Mistletoe Drive; Elmwood Avenue

Streetlight Program Update

In the coming months, Middletown's streetlights will start looking very different. The Township's long-planned upgrade program is about to enter its construction phase, when workers will install LED fixtures in place of the current streetlights. The new lights will provide a better quality light while reducing energy use and costs.

Middletown collaborated on a project that included forty other nearby municipalities to convert streetlights to LEDs while taking advantage of low-interest loans, economies of scale, and guaranteed savings. While the total cost of the project is expected to be over $1 million, projected total savings will outpace the loan payments. Over the 20 years of the guaranteed savings agreement, the Township will save approximately $1.1 million.

Throughout the past year, Township staff have worked with the program vendors and consultants to determine the best project to fit the community's needs. The resulting project will upgrade approximately 2,700 streetlights throughout 2017. Township crews and contractors will begin installing these new fixtures this spring, and the project is expected to continue into the fall.

Donations for Skate Park

Waste Management presents a donation for the Skate Park
Another way businesses can help the community is to sponsor the repair of one of the local park features - the Skate Park at the Middletown Community Park. This facility was in a state of disrepair, and it has recently been demolished due to safety concerns. The Township's Skate Park Committee is actively seeking donations to rebuild the structure and provide it as a resource to Township residents. The Committee's goal is to raise $100,000 to match the Township's contribution.

Those interested in helping the Township once again provide this facility for local youth recreation can donate through the Middletown Community Foundation website. For information on sponsorship opportunities, please contact Debby Lamanna at 215-750-3890.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity has recently built up its presence in Middletown, offering residents and businesses new ways to help the community. In 2015, the Bucks County chapter built a house within the Township. They now offer two new programs that aimed at benefiting low-income families and individuals.

A Brush with Kindness is a program that helps low-income home owners make interior and exterior repairs to improve health and safety or to preserve their homes. The main targets for this program are older or disabled individuals who need safer, more functional structures and facilities in their home. A Brush with Kindness relies on low-cost supplies and volunteer labor to allow homeowners to pay only what they can afford. If you would like more information or if your business would like to volunteer, please see the program's website.

Habitat has also opened up a ReStore in Langhorne. Habitat Restore is a home improvement store that sells gently used goods at low cost, especially to seniors and veterans. They are currently seeking donations of appliances, furniture, building materials, doors, windows, cabinets, tools, lighting, and other household goods. Habitat for Humanity will pick up all donations free of charge! Any person or business seeking to donate and bring low-cost goods to those in need may call 215-822-2708 or visit www.habitatbucks.org.
