3rd Annual Women Build

Midland County Habitat for Humanity 3rd Annual Women Build Week was May 7 - 11. Women Build empowers women to build Habitat for Humanity homes, enabling them to positively impact the lives of children by making homeownership a present reality for families. This was an amazing event in every way. This year we started the week with the north and south walls up. The week ended with all the walls up, leveled, plumbed, and secured. The roof trusses went up, the sheathing was finished, and almost all of the shingles were in place. The volunteers completed almost 3 weeks' worth of work in one week. And speaking of volunteers, we had 87 new female volunteers. Groups from Northwood University, Dow Corning, and Midland County Council on Aging had some GREAT team building experiences and stories to tell for years to come. A special thank you to all of our local volunteers who come out every year, without you guys it would never get done and Jon would be even more grumpy then his nametag says....

Another round of thanks to the many companies and churches that made the week possible:

  • Lowe's - Locally they provided a clinic for the safe use of powers tools and nationally Midland County Habitat for Humanity is the recipient of one of the $5,000 gift cards that they gave out.
  • The Dow Chemical Company - They provided a tent for us to use during the week. It was VERY helpful during the few times when it rained and was also nice on the days that the sun was very bright.
  • First United Methodist Church - They provided lunch for all of the workers on Friday and chairs for us to use during the week.
  • Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church - Reverend Rhonda Myers provided us with our opening prayer and they also provided lunch for all the workers on Monday.
  • Trinity Lutheran Church - They provided lunch for all the workers on Wednesday.
  • Family Fair - They provided a $25 gift card that we used to get snacks and fruit for the days.

Thank you all and we are looking forward to celebrating Women Build Week next year, in fact we had so much fun and so much response that we might just go for Women Build Month!

We are in the planning process for the 4th Annual Women Build Week, May 4 - 10, 2013. We will be building for a family with six daughters during this week and look forward to seeing many volunteers back again and many new faces.

Spartan Stores Step Up for Habitat for Humanity

Abby and MaeIn February and March, Spartan stores throughout the state ran a "Spartan Stores Steps Up for Habitat for Humanity" promotion. The local Spartan store, Family Fare, really stepped up to the challenge. Not only did they exceed the past previous totals, they were in the top 10 in the state for giving.

Paul Conn and his staff support Midland County Habitat for Humanity through selling medallions, have two ice cream socials and a hot dog and pop special. Thank you to the Top Sellers of DennisMae West, Dennis Bailey and Abby Scharf.

We really appreciate the efforts of all of the staff at Family Fair and look forward to beating the donations next year. Thank you Family Fair!

Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative

This year's Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative was also a complete success! We moved 2012 Mapa little to the west and worked in the area by the M-20 / BUS US-10 corridor into Midland. See highlighted map.

We had more than 300 volunteers work on 22 homes and the 1016 Treatment house. These awesome volunteers provided help by being painters, removing brush, caulking, window replacement, registration and more.

Thank you to each and every one of you. Also a big thank you to those of you who braved the weather and came out to help during the rainy days.

We thank all of our sponsors for helping to make this a successful event. We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to our 2011 NRI B&A - 4

MCHFH partners with Disability Network of Mid-Michigan on Capital Campaign

By Jennifer Parks, MCHFH Executive Director

The mission and vision of Midland County Habitat for Humanity is to demonstrate Christian principles by building decent, affordable housing through a partnership of volunteers and Midland County people in need. We here at MCHFH have the goal to provide our organization with a decent, affordable place to live. Through our history we have rented space, now after 24 years serving Midland County, we are in the process of "buying our own home."

On July 31, 2012 MCHFH and Disability Network of Mid-Michigan signed a respective Joint Venture agreement and kicked off their Capital Campaign to purchase the building in which the two organizations' have been living for the past three years. MCHFH is the owner of the building and we are currently under a Land Contract with Don and Joann Hawkins.

We are honored and pleased to continue our partnership with Disability Network of Mid-Michigan. We feel that this has been a great relationship between both organizations thus far and are excited to see the future potential collaborations that this continued relationship will bring to not only our organizations, but the families and consumers we serve. Through this partnership we hope to drive down expenses, reduce our debt and position ourselves to be more self-sustainable; with the ultimate goal of being able to serve more families, consumers and not only Midland County residents, but residents of our entire region.

We have a goal of raising $650,000 to pay off the Land Contract and make necessary exterior improvements to the shared Parking lots and Roof. This is a lofty goal with the current economy that we are all living in, but we know that both organization mission and purpose are well supported in Midland and the entire Great Lakes Bay Region. For more information on the Capital Campaign or to contribute, please contact Executive Director, Jennifer Parks, at 989-496-0900 ext. 21 or by email at parks@midlandhabitat.org.

2012 House Builds
During the building season this year, we build homes for two very deserving families.
 Nicholson
The first one was for the Nicholson family. Tyler, Tresa, and their girls lost their house to a fire days before Christmas in 2010. Their dedication was one full of tears and smiles when Tyler and Tresa talked about  what they lost and then what they gained from Midland County Habitat for Humanity. It was truly a blessed day.

The second house was built for the Bicknell family. Joseph and Trisha and their 4 children had been living in a single wide mobile home that was built in 1986. The mobile home had many issues with it including electrical. Joseph and Trisha will be moving into to their new home by the end of the month and will be able to celebrate Christmas in their new home. The Dedication will be on Sunday, December 2, 2012 at 2:00 pm. R.S.V.P. to Marlane Davis at office@midlandhabitat.org, if you are interested in attending.

Thank you to Jon Horton, our construction manager and all the volunteers who helped to make 2012 a extraordinary year for our families.
