Dear Members and Friends,
Over the past few weeks, as I planned classes to teach at MAC, the concept of balance continued to present itself in my ruminations. So, I decided to go with it, and use the theme of balance in several class plans. While we physically practice balance in our exercises, most of us also seek a metaphorical concept of balance in the practice of our daily lives. I found a quote by Jana Kingsford that set off a light bulb for me, "Balance is not something you find. It is something you create." I hear a lot of talk about finding balance in our lives, finding the perfect balance of ease and effort, challenge and achievement, giving and receiving, work and play, activity and stillness, cardio and strength, confidence and humility. Yet, it does seem true, balance is not "found," as if by accident or luck. Balance, like happiness, does not happen to us, nor is it imposed upon us by an external force. Rather, balance is created by our own design, it is the product of our intention and choices. Our time and attention are valuable resources, and how we choose to spend them creates (or fails to create) the balance we seek in our lives. If we tune into our choices of how we spend our time and of where we extend our energies, we will see that we do have control over the balance of our lives, and there is a power in that choice. Actually, there is a lot of power in the choices we make all day long about how to spend our time and extend our energies. May we all take this next month and keep the idea of balance simmering on the back burner of our brain, notice how we choose to spend our time and energies, and how these choices affect our sense of balance. Perhaps, simply by navigating the process of noticing how we choose to spend our time and energy, we may discover a way to create a deeper sense of balance and happiness. Our time and energy are our most valuable resources, so let's spend them wisely.
With Health and Happiness,
Melissa O'Toole

FITNESS
Private Yoga Personal Training Sessions
Why invest in yoga personal training? A private session allows for a more intimate view into YOUR practice. You can start a new practice, deepen your current practice or spend some time working with an injury or specific goal or concern.
Injuries and health concerns can make a normal yoga class impractical for some participants. A yoga instructor teaching several students at one time cannot focus on individual needs or ensure that the poses will not further injure or strain a particular person. Furthermore, health concerns like pregnancy, diabetes or heart disease may require special alterations to one's yoga practice.
When health concerns are a potential issue, it is best to have a private yoga lesson with a properly trained Yoga Therapist. This can aid in working around the problem, avoid further complications, and help to ease pain or lessen the effects of a certain diagnosis.
T
he MAC fitness department announces that yoga personal training sessions are now available and offered by MAC yoga instructor and certified Yoga Therapist, Shannon Somogyi. If you are interested in exploring a deeper, personalized yoga practice, for any reason, please stop by the fitness desk or the front desk to get in touch with Shannon. Read Shannon's biography below to learn about her training and credentials.
