Reminders and Announcements

Keyboard Mania
Tickets are still available for Keyboard Mania, which is tonight at the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville. The show is going to be incredible. Don't miss it. This event is a benefit concert for our school and will support the Steinway Restoration Fund.

Diwali Festival
Join us on Saturday, November 16 at 5:30 pm in the Gymnasium for a very special November Community Dinner and cultural event where we will celebrate the Festival of Diwali, perhaps the most well-known of the Indian festivals. It is celebrated throughout India, as well as in Indian communities throughout the world. Diwali is also known as the "festival of lights," for the common practice is to light small oil lamps (called diyas) and place them around the home, in courtyards, verandahs, and gardens, as well as on roof-tops and outer walls. The celebration of the festival is invariably accompanied by the exchange of sweets and the explosion of fireworks. It heralds the approach of winter and the beginning of the sowing season. Through the collaborative efforts of our Food For Thought Program, our Diversity Committee, and a devoted group of our families who are native to India, we bring you an amazing evening of food, fun, and nourishing celebration. Come enjoy delicious and exotic culinary delights lovingly prepared using traditional home recipes. The rich cultural program will include a welcome ceremony, cultural activities such as Rangoli designs (floor decorations), Mehandi (henna) painting, decorating and lighting of traditional clay lamps, chanting Shanti Mantras (prayers for peace), and finally, a wonderful array of Classical Music and Dance Performances by students, parents, and friends. We will finish the evening with a fantastic firework display. Our Diwali festival is open to both the KWS community as well as to the general public. Help us spread the word to your family, friends, and neighbors. We would love to celebrate this special event with a lively and abundant crowd.

Coffeehouse
The 9th Grade class invites students in Grades 5-12 and all KWS parents to participate in a Coffeehouse in the High School Library on Friday, November 22 at 7:00 pm. Refreshments will be available for purchase; this is a fundraiser for the 9th Grade. Please sign up in advance for a performance slot. Sign-up sheets are posted in the hallways of the High School. You may also sign up by contacting one of the 9th Grade Class Advisors (Hezi Haut, Elisabeth Burgess, or Anna Zay). Middle School students may sign up with their Class Teachers. Any type of performance is most welcome (music, spoken word, reading, dance, etc.). Even if you do not wish to perform, please consider attending to support the performers.

Inclement Weather
Winter weather can affect the school schedule in a number of ways (described below). If it is snowing or snow is predicted, you will get an early morning call through the automated message system to let you know our status. You can also check KYW 1060 AM or TV stations ABC 6 and NBC 10. Our closing number is Chester County # 867. If you depend on bussing to transport your child to school please also check the status of your school district, which may be operating differently (e.g. closed when KWS is open) due to local conditions.
- Cancellation because of road conditions. Once we have gathered information on the status of local school districts, we make our decision. If we decide to close, we will send out an automated message to the school community, usually between 6:00 and 6:30 am.
- Delayed Opening to allow for safer driving conditions. Typically a two-hour delay, with classes beginning at 10:00 am. Modified school lunches will be served to those students who ordered lunch. Rosebud Garden and Parent/Child Circle will not be in session on delayed opening days; Kindergarten WILL be in session. As with a cancellation, parents will be notified via an early morning automated message.
- Early Dismissal due to a snowstorm during the day. Each school district informs us of the time they will send their buses to us---we cannot control this. If your child is a bus rider, please listen to the news to see whether your district is closing early if it begins to snow during the day. All bus riders will be sent home on the appropriate buses unless the school is instructed otherwise by a parent or guardian on the day of early dismissal. If most of our bussed students are leaving early, we will close school and send car riders and student drivers home too; an automated message to home, cell, and work numbers will inform you of our status. Please have a plan in place whereby your child knows to go to a neighbor in case no one is home if s/he arrives earlier than expected. Because of the possibility of differing weather conditions in the surrounding areas, parents are free to decide on the safest course of action, considering their own local conditions, and may pick up their child any time after Main Lesson if it begins to snow during the day.
If you have any questions, please contact Kay Alexander, ext. 1.

Media Consciousness Workshop
The Parent Education Committee is pleased to present a workshop on Media Consciousness in the Digital Age, on Monday, November 18 at 7:30 pm in the High School Library. With the guidance of experienced professional Harlan Gilbert of Green Meadow Waldorf School and Sunbridge Institute, we will discover how media affects a child's brain development and how all parents, regardless of their personal parenting philosophies, can work together to support the children and the work of the school. Refreshments will be served. Please contact Beth Packard with questions.

Craft Show Tea Room
We have entertainment, we have ambiance, but we need your help to make the treats for the Craft Show Tea Room irresistible! Please help by baking or buying fancy cakes and pastries; brownies and cookies are favorites too. Desserts may be dropped off at the school kitchen on Friday, December 6, labeled TEA ROOM. If you bake or buy a dessert with special ingredients such as vegan or gluten-free please label. Thanks! Questions? Contact Linda.

Emergency Operations Plan
As part of our emergency operation plan, we are asking all visitors to the campus to please sign in at the Middle School or High School office. The layout of our school campus provides very unique challenges when we attempt to provide as safe an environment as possible. It is not our intention to inconvenience any of our school community members as we work to not compromise the safety on campus or the mission of the school. We appreciate your understanding the steps that we are taking to accomplish these goals.

Community Dinner
As a reminder, the Community Dinner originally scheduled for Thursday, November 21 has been replaced by the Diwali Festival being held this Saturday, November 16 at 5:30 pm. We hope you can join us!

OUR MISSION

Kimberton Waldorf School is dedicated to nurturing the developing child in accordance with the educational principles of Rudolf Steiner. The school supports the unfolding individuality of each child by awakening the child's capacity to meet the world, others, and the self with warmth of heart, clarity of thought, and strength of purpose. It is also our mission to build a diverse community where the spiritual in each human being is recognized and to create social forms that ennoble human striving.
