MWM In the News

When Talmesha Richards graduated with her Ph.D. in cellular and molecular medicine from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine two years ago, she felt a personal obligation to encourage other girls to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering or math. "I know the power of a mentor. I'm a testimony to it," says the 33-year-old who now works as a director of project partnerships for STEMconnector, an organization that connects corporations with community organizations to invest in STEM training. Richards can recall mentors as early as 3rd and 8th grades who helped encourage her in math and science.

Leveraging Mentoring to Build the STEM Pipeline

As more and more companies leverage mentoring to generate youth interest in STEM careers, the 2015 National Mentoring Summit will once again serve as an invaluable resource for sharing, learning and networking for corporate attendees engaged in youth mentoring. The Corporate & Philanthropic Track at the National Mentoring Summit is open to private sector professionals and individuals representing philanthropic investors. It is especially valuable for those focused on workforce development, corporate social responsibility, social impact, employee volunteerism and human resources. Corporate and philanthropic support and engagement in quality youth mentoring is a critical asset in expanding the mentoring effect to strengthen our communities and build the future workforce to support a STEM economy. This is your opportunity to enhance the great work you are doing! The 2015 National Mentoring Summit will take place January 28-30, 2015 at the Renaissance Washington, DC, Downtown. Check out the details and register today.

The Women, Engineering, Science, and Technology (WEST) Symposium Promotes Women In Science (Asian Scientist)
On Friday last week, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) held a public symposium showcasing some of the best female scientific talent from Singapore and abroad.

The Women in Engineering, Science, and Technology symposium, or WEST symposium, was held in conjunction with Marie Curie's 147th birthday. Curie was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize and the first person to win the prestigious award in two different categories-physics in 1903 and chemistry in 1911.

While women make up about half of the world's population, only 24 percent of the scientists and engineers in the United States and the European Union are women; in Singapore, that figure stands at 30 percent.

Professor Ada E. Yonath, who was the first woman in 45 years to win the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2009, was the keynote speaker at the WEST symposium. A crystallographer best known for her pioneering work on the structure of the ribosome (cells which help make proteins), she is also a role model for female scientists having received the L'Oral-UNESCO For Women in Science Award in 2008.

Nascar Driver Danica Patrick's Car Promotes STEM Edcuation
Danica Patrick thrives as a woman in a man's world.

The 32-year-old - the first female driver to lead at the Indy 500 - is one of the most successful and well-known women in the history of racing.

She didn't get there by stooping to gender stereotypes.

"If it's something you're really interested in, then you're going to have the confidence and commitment and drive to make yourself successful," she tells U.S. News. "If it's something you really love, nothing should stand in your way."
- Danica Patrick

These days, the NASCAR driver pays that attitude forward by empowering a younger generation of women to forge their own paths in the male-dominated arenas of science, technology, engineering, and math.

Women in STEM can learn to become scientific leaders by taking a leaf out of the corporate skills handbook, says a panel at the World Economic Forum

Scientists may not readily identify themselves as entrepreneurs, but a comparison can indeed be made between the corporate business sector and the scientific enterprise. Are their skills that women in business have that women in science can acquire and benefit from? The intersection of STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering and Math), Innovation, Business and Women were recently addressed on a panel  at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Summer Davos meeting in Tianjin China.

The reasons women are lacking in STEM industries and academia are multiple and complex, however one major hurdle we discussed is the lack of business knowledge among the women STEM scientists.

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics Spring 2014 report, "STEM 101: Intro to Tomorrow's Jobs," states that jobs in occupations related to STEM are projected to increase to more than 9 million between 2012 and 2022, resulting in growth of approximately 1 million more jobs over 2012 employment levels.

To address this skills gap, the New York Academy of Sciences launched the Global STEM Alliance, a global private-public partnership with industry, academic and educational institutions, government, and the nonprofit sector. Through a virtual platform, the initiative will pair students and mentoring STEM experts from around the world.

Project Scientist girls build a toy car using a "method sheet."
Ingersoll-Rand gave 43 girls a glimpse of what it would be like to work in a science, engineering, technology or mathematics with recent activities at it Trane facility in Charlotte. The girls are taking part in Project Scientist, a Charlotte effort to identify young women who have aptitude for STEM subjects. During the day, students designed product-marketing materials, used their analytical thinking to estimate the weight of Trane products and used a "method sheet" to assemble a toy car.
