Our 2nd Annual Mindshare Learning 21st Century EdTech Leadership Summit-"MakingITHappen" has come and gone, yet the conversations continue. A passionate of collection of EdTech leaders gathered at the York University's Institute for Research on Learning technology from broad spectrum of education and industry leaders from K12, post-secondary and industry.
There's no question, despite the growing trend toward eLearning, face-to-face interaction remains critical to the learning process. Hence, I'm a real proponent of blended learning, which enables the magic of deep learning to happen. If you missed our event, please click here to view the recorded webcast, courtesy of ABEL. Our survey responses revealed that 85% would attend a future Summit and 15% likely would attend. As the momentum continues to buiild, we're looking at a larger venue for next year!

Thoughts: 2nd Annual MindShare Learning EdTech Leadership Summit 2011
A Teacher's Reflection Joseph Romano, OCT, B.Ed, BFA The role of a teacher is that which is constantly undergoing redefinition and reformation. On the tipping point, today teachers work less as conveyors of knowledge and more as facilitators along a journey of discovery who learn with their students within a shared learning space. As a teacher, I understand that my role has much to do with what I do as it does with what my students do. It is with this that I think about how my actions shape the learning experience(s) of my students, now and tomorrow, and how I may play an integral part in it all.
As a teacher, my job is about learning. I promote it, I attempt it and I practice it. This thought process is one which, in my opinion, is essential in breaking new ground with innovative ideas and critical pedagogical thought. If we are not thinking about our learning, how can we consider that of others? With a worldwide wealth of knowledge available for our taking, why not go ahead and take it?

Hall.com looks like a great site to use in a high school or post-secondary class setting. It offers students and teachers a suite of chat and collaboration tools that build collaboration and teamwork. You have accdess to polls, a notepad, To-Dos and a ranker to create a real collaborative and teambuilding site. The developers create Hall.com because they were "Frustrated by communication tools that were siloed and did not solve real prob-lems. Looks like they're on their way!

 Podcast interview with Dr. Debra Pepler on bullying and promoting healthy relationships

Recently, I caught up with Dr. Debra Pepler, Professor and Researcher from York University and co-founder of PREVNet a national network of Canadian researchers focusing on bullying.
Although cell phones and the Internet help us learn, connect, and communicate in new and exciting ways, these tools have permanently changed how we interact with each other. An instant message, photo or video can be broadcasted to thousands, instantly. In light of this, new kinds of harassment and bullying have emerged and it's affecting the majority of youth in Canada.
Lady Gaga recently got in touch with a high school student at Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto. Student council president Jacques St. Pierre reached out to the pop star earlier this fall, in response Lady Gaga shot a short video thanking him and his schools efforts combating bullying and ending discrimination. Celebrity forces such as Gaga have been essential in sparking the anti-bullying conversation and help young people seek avenues to deal with harassment and prevent it from happening. Inspiring work!
It was a pleasure speaking with Dr. Debra Pepler on anit-bullying about her researcher and PREVNet and advice to all of us to help promote healthy relationships for young people in Canada.

The Connectors, Leaders and People on the Move
The moniker-- 21st Century learning has been around for many years. Yet it gets a bad rap by some who consider it too cliche. So, I ask, fad or trend? Perhaps an era in time where 21st Century inspires change and innovation that will transform learing--a defining moment. In fact, I recently had coffee with the friend and colleague who is considering a master's thesis focusing on trends and fads with integrating technology in education. Here's I try to narrow the focus. Firstly, does the technology solve a problem? Is it easy to use? Does it link well to the curriculum? These are just a few key questions educators need to address when selecting their technology of choice. BTW, I think it's a fabulous thesis topic!
Congratulations to Marty Keast, president Pearson K12 and member of MindShare's advisory board, who was recently appointed to the Council of the Canadian Education Association (CEA).
This past month we partnered with the folks at Canadian Teachers Federation and the Media Awareness Network to promote Media Literacy week...they have some great resources and are doing amazing things to help teachers support students in being more media savvy... a critical skill in the 21st Century.

It was great to connect with former RCT board members recently to catch-up and share in their celebration. David Dollimore and David Wai were honoured for their contributions to the RCT board over the years.
