Mindfulness Helps Students Feel Calm and Find Focus
Katonah Elementary School recently dedicated a day to mindfulness. Jessica Knopke, a yoga teacher and KLSD parent, spent time with each grade level, teaching students conscious breathing, postures, and positive affirmations.

"These tools improve students' ability to focus and help them when they feel nervous," said Knopke.

Creative Projects Encourages Close Reading Habits
A timeline that tracks linear and magical time in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." A hand-drawn map of the island in "Lord of the Flies." Call-outs of favorite quotes from "The Last Lecture."

These are just some of the imaginative book-based projects in Christine Watroba and Jeanne Kellachan's co-taught sixth grade English class.

Classic Courtroom Drama Portrays Timeless Themes
John Jay High School presented "12 Angry Jurors" last weekend. The play, written by Reginald Rose in the 1950s, is considered the gold standard of courtroom dramas.

Director Amanda Urban choose to set this production in present day as well as in the round, allowing the audience to feel as though they were a part of the jury.
