The Lord God helps me;
therefore I have not been disgraced;
therefore I have set my face like flint,
and I know that I shall not be put to shame;
he who vindicates me is near.
Who will contend with me?
Let us stand up together.
Who are my adversaries?
Let them confront me.
It is the Lord God who helps me;
who will declare me guilty?
From the desert of lent these words of Isaiah emerge like an oasis spring. This reading is meant to accompany Palm Sunday, and how perfect they are. Walking with Jesus towards this holy week means encountering the worst of what the world can offer. Betrayal, fear, bigotry, violence, isolation and apathy all come together in Christ last week. These are the same sins and struggles we face all the time only amplified with higher stakes for those of us who know who Jesus really is.
I find these words to be so comforting because they speak of the resolve we find in knowing God is with us and working through us. I love the image of having face like flint. That are steadfastness will spark the flame of what is to come. I think this is important when we face any sin either outside us or inside us. I think it is important to remember that it is God fighting the battle. He will win it. He will be the salvation and knowing that we can stand firm.
1. What are the evils that Christ faces in holy week? How are they connected to what we face today?
2. How does the passion of our Lord teach us to confront evil?
3. What are you seeking courage to do in your life now? How can you invite God to help you?

Children's Chapel is a place for children to go worship in the traditions of our faith but in a way that's geared towards kindergarten-3rd grade. It will be held at the 10:30 service and the children will return during the Peace. Volunteer adults and teens lead the worship and music, and children do the rest - from reading the Psalm and Prayers of the People, to lighting candles and collecting the offertory, to running the power points. Please remember to take your children to the restroom prior to the service. See you there and be ready to have fun in Children's Chapel!
