"I love the Lord, because he has heard the voice of my supplication, because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him."
When it comes to prayer there is one thing I am really bad at. It is strange because I know other people who seem to do it without thinking. For me though my biggest struggle in prayer comes when my prayers are answered. I know how to thank God for the things that I didn't ask for, but as soon as I find the thing I have actually longed for I don't know how to say, "Our prayers are answered." I don't know if it is because it feels like I am taking credit for praying when the credit goes to God. I don't know if doubt floods in when something goes right because then I am afraid of losing it. I don't know if it is just that I all of a sudden get embarrassed that I had to ask in the first place. I don't know if I get so anxious about the next thing that I don't savor the miracles as they come.
I know this is a challenge spiritually. Being able to say even to yourself that God has answered your prayers is actually spiritually critical. Unless we know we are heard we will never grow closer in any relationship. Also if my prayers don't make a difference in my life then I have worked God out of the equation, and I lose not only His guidance but my wonder at the miracles He gives us every day.
One of the beauties of being in a church in the midst of a Capital Campaign is that it is an excuse to really focus on gratitude. We are often patterned to look at the world as a set of problems to be fixed, but the Christian pattern is to look at the world as a series of blessings to be celebrated. So this Sunday when we are reading these words from Psalm 116 and making them your own what will you think of? What prayers are answered in your life? What wonderful things is God doing with you?
1. Think of a time when you prayed for something and the thing you longed for came to be. Do you think of that as an answered prayer?
2. How deeply do you understand your prayer life as a two way street? You talk, but do you hear or see a response?
3. How can you deepen your gratitude for answered prayers?

Children's Chapel is a place for children to go worship in the traditions of our faith but in a way that's geared towards kindergarten-3rd grade. It will be held at the 10:30 service and the children will return during the Peace. Volunteer adults and teens lead the worship and music, and children do the rest - from reading the Psalm and Prayers of the People, to lighting candles and collecting the offertory, to running the power points. Please remember to take your children to the restroom prior to the service. See you there and be ready to have fun in Children's Chapel!
