Miracles in Healing... a rather provocative topic for a medically-oriented newsletter.  But the topic won't be a surprise to readers who know that we approach our work in an integrated manner.

As much of our work is with serious chronic illnesses, we have learned something really important:  there are no terminal illnesses -- there is only terminal thinking.  A physician who gives a patient a terminal prognosis may think he/she is working honestly and realistically and in the best interests of the patient.  This is only because, well, it is because the physician has given up on the possibility of a miracle.  Establishing a self-fulling prophecy as regards to negative health outcomes raises questions about the role of a healer.

Another reason this newsletter is thought provoking is that when Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel come up with a topic, we offer no clues to our writers (or to each other) regarding thematic scope. However, as you read the articles below, you may notice that although the content and approach vary, there are common themes that unite them: miracles are energetic expressions of nature re-achieving balance, and the laws of nature as we think we know them are indeed arbitrary.

Rather than summarize the articles as we usually do, we'll let you discover them for yourself. We always invite our readers to comment and to share their own examples.  Please do so, if you feel so inclined.

May miracles fill your life!

The Energetics of Miracles

In a recent book interview, we were discussing the nature of miracles in healing.

People find events to be miraculous when they have no precedent and no rational explanation for what has occurred or when they have been led to expect that there is no solution and yet a solution is found. A person may have been treated on the basis of an inaccurate diagnosis or given inappropriate medications for a condition.  When the cause becomes clear, and the patient is treated appropriately, the "miracle" occurs.

An example would be a woman who came to me with awful diarrhea of 6 months duration. She had been to her PCP and several gastroenterologists, to no avail. I found that the diarrhea had started when she had implemented a new supplement regime, high in magnesium. When magnesium is not absorbed, diarrhea results. Stopping the magnesium, the problem vanished. This was, to the patient, a miracle, but, to me, expected. We expect well indicated remedies in proper dosages to work for conditions which are accurately diagnosed.

A second example is found in the use of powerful and effective remedies not recognized in the conventional world. One such remedy is high dose intravenous vitamin C. Vitamin C can stop the herpes virus in its tracks. We had a young shingles patient who was over the shingles in one week with high dose C. (That condition often lingers for months). With the IV C, cancer markers may plummet, both in colon cancer and prostate cancer patients whose conventional treatments had been ineffective. We've seen people survive with good quality of life long after the demise predicted by their oncologist. Again, these are miracles to the patients. We are thrilled with the results, but they are not miracles to us.

Another category of cures that one might consider miraculous are those cures that come about through energy medicine. These would be cures through homeopathy or flower essences or techniques like emotional freedom technique.

Examples easily come to mind.

A young woman whose menstrual cycles had vanished had not been helped by her gynecologist. On questioning, I learned that, at the time that her cycles ceased, she had remembered and was processing childhood sexual abuse. Stopping her period would have been a good subconscious solution in the moment, but, moving forward, was not. EFT can address and reprogram that type of subconscious reactivity. In fact, within 2 sessions, her period returned.

Re flower essences, a severely disabled woman came with a multitude of complaints. She had literally been to every doc in town and unsuccessfully tried many well indicated remedies. In one of those wonderful intuitive flashes, a flower essence formula came to mind for her. I gave her the formula, and when she returned the next week, she was unrecognizable, and had no complaints.

There are many similar experiences with homeopathy. And still more experiences with those "black box" therapies which assess, address, and balance the energetic flows in the body. These cures all work by the scientific principle of vibratory resonance. The cures only seem miraculous because our understanding of the world of energy is limited.

And then there are the truly miraculous cures of spiritual healing, through prayer, through hand healing, through grace. See below for thoughts on these miracles.

In this new section of our newsletter, we will describe unique health care products we offer in our new, small retail section of our clinic.

Homebiotic -- Make Your Home Biome Safe

Homebiotic is an all-natural probiotic spray derived from healthy soil. It helps to restore a beneficial bacterial microbiome in your home.

Current treatments for mold in the home either aren't safe or practical, or they don't last. For example, chlorine bleach is toxic to people and also ruins many of the surfaces in a home that are prone to mold growth, like painted drywall. Other home antifungals are made of micronized salt, which stops working as soon as it is no longer evenly distributed on a given surface because the salt has to be there to prevent the mold from growing. It's also difficult to apply to vertical surfaces, so its effects tend to be temporary.

A new, natural way to keep your home healthy - Homebiotic is easy to apply, effective and one treatment lasts up to six months.

Fact 1:  The cultures in Homebiotic have been scientifically proven to destroy mold as part of their competitive advantage as a species. We as humans can live alongside them symbiotically to keep toxic molds out of our own environment.

Fact 2: Once applied, bacteria grow in the treated areas and suppress the pathogenic fungi in order to establish their own colonies. Botanical oils help break down the mold so the bacteria can suppress the mold more easily, and also give Homebiotic a pleasant aroma.

Fact 3: All Safe, Natural Ingredients: water, organic molasses, bacterial cultures & enzymes, organic citrus-derived botanical oils

Understanding Miracles
(How Did Jesus Do It?)

Dr. Connie and I just returned from three weeks in glorious Spain and Southern France.  As I mentioned in a travelogue we sent to friends and family,
the highlights of the trip for me were the visits to Lourdes and the towns where St. Teresa of Avila lived.

I grew up Roman Catholic.  Every kid in Catholic school learns about Lourdes and what happened there in the mid-1800s. We also learned about the healing miracles that have occurred after bathing in the waters of the grotto.  If you are hazy on the details of Lourdes, look on Netflix for the "Song of Bernadette."  The details in the movie are accurate according to recorded history and the movie is inspiring.  Our son, Gabriel, loved the movie when he was a boy, and my sisters and I also loved it when we were kids.

An early morning dip in the ice cold water of the Grotto of Lourdes opened the floodgates of my tears, and my devotion, magnified by the devotion of my fellow pilgrims, carried me to cellular remembrance of the purity of my own youthful, unquestioning acceptance of miracles.

The miracles of Jesus especially moved me.  How could he raise someone from the dead?  Turn water into wine? Multiply loaves and fishes?  I remember a depiction of Christ with energy streaming from his hands.  Was that it?  If so, where did this energy come from?  As a kid, I was taught that there were things I could not comprehend and that I had to accept on faith.

As an adult, I still accept things on faith, but a faith that is tempered by understanding and experience.  Now I understand that miracles occur when two elements are present in their purest, most perfect forms: attunement and intention.

The true magnificence in humans happens when we are in attunement with something greater than ourselves - a source of energy and inspiration that we allow to flow through us.  I think of humans as kind of radios - as vessels through which programs emerge if we remember to put up our antennas. Indeed, the focus of the spiritual path is developing the consciousness of how to be receptive to the energies that are always available to us - how to tune into the "Whispers From Eternity" and allow their inspiration to manifest in our expression of life.

Think of intention as prayer - a prayer that healing energies flow through our "radio receiver" without any interference or static or expectation or ego or desire to make things happen.  Detachment and freedom from expectation - God's will, not ours, be done.  We are not the cause; we are the medium through which the cause creates the effect.

Jesus's miracles were all characterized by attunement with "the Father" and the intention that the will of the Father be done.  As the energy flowed through him, the laws of physics as we know them were suspended and molecules re-aligned in matter to conform to the pure intention in the moment.  This is perfectly in alignment with faith - the innocent faith I had as a child and the tempered, more thoughtful faith I have as an adult.

Miracles, with their sense of magic and mystery, are simply the result of pure, uncensored alignment with basic principles of the universe and all creation.

Opening to the Miraculous

Coming from all corners of the earth, hoping for healing for themselves or others, millions of pilgrims wend their way to  Lourdes. (The Basilica of Saint Pius alone accommodates 25,000 people.) Of those millions, there are those who experience miraculous healing. What distinguishes those few from the many?

Healing is not about wishful thinking, though belief (even mistaken belief) is powerful. People experience healing with placebo medicines and placebo surgeries. And we know that the brain is far more capable of promoting miraculous healing than we generally assume it to be.

As noted in the musings, we expect energy medicines to work because of the scientific principle of vibratory resonance. By the same token, there is a resonance or attunement with spirit required for spiritual healing to happen. Spiritual healers attune themselves to this already existent force, and are able to channel the healing energy. People of faith attune themselves to that energy and allow it to do its work.

There is no limit to the healing that can be brought about through spiritual healing. Patients are often told by a doctor that a disease is incurable. The real message is that, in the experience of that doctor, a cure is not known. That is not the same thing as a disease being incurable.

Parmahansa Yogananda eloquently expresses the healing power of the universe in the following quotation:

"If one has faith in, or intuitive knowledge of, Cosmic Consciousness as the prime mover of all atomic Creation, then, through that all-pervading consciousness one can act on or control any portion of matter on the earth or on a distant star."

"Those who know God can do everything.  God who strews the flowers of Milky Ways on the garden of space, and God who lights the spark of life in the lamps of countless creatures, God who created every atom and feeling and thought in all sentient creatures, can do anything.  His devotees who are one with Him can also do anything.  Jesus meant exactly this.  Removing difficulties by will power, as people with strong will power do, is nothing unusual.  But Jesus said to tune the human will to the divine will and destroy its limitations.  By that we would be able to remove mountains, raise the dead, or do anything else even as God does."

Many factors come into play. If a healer is involved, the power of the healer can prevail over disease or injury. With the greatest of healers, less is required of the person hoping to be healed. In general, though, the patient must be receptive. This receptivity of the patient to the healer or to divine intervention, through faith or attunement, is first and foremost in most cases. Attunement to divine energy requires faith, willpower and deep commitment.

Marvelous and otherwise inexplicable healing miracles can then occur.  The normal laws of physical reality fall away, and the lame can walk, the blind can see.  At Lourdes, people pray and bathe in and drink the holy water. Some experience major miracles of healing, others, minor miracles of mystical connection, and kindness in unexpected places. Miracles come in all sizes!

The Miracle of High Dose Intravenous Vitamin C

About four years ago a woman with stage 4 colorectal cancer was almost carried into our office by her family members.  She was so weak she could hardly stand. Her oncologist had told her there was nothing else conventional medicine could do for her and that she had only days to live.  As a last resort, she decided to do research on line about alternative approaches to cancer, and found our WEB SITE that discusses the therapeutic effects of intravenous high dose vitamin C.

I told her that we never made any promises, except that we might be able to improve her quality of life for as long as she was in her body.  She began receiving regular infusions of vitamin C. Her energy improved dramatically.  She was able to take walks, go on picnics and have high quality exchanges with her large family.  She stayed in her body for eight months and only the last week and a half of her life was difficult.

Why haven't you heard more about high dose I.V. vitamin C and why aren't they using it in conventional medical circles?  Two reasons:  the first one is money.  Drug research and cancer research are a big bucks industries.  The economy would take a hit if a simple, safe, miracle cure was found.

Secondly, new, easy-to-understand approaches to medical situations are slow to be incorporated into the corporate medical system. Fresh fruit was known to cure scurvy in the mid-eighteenth century, yet the fact was ignored for nearly 100 years. Countless thousands died in the meantime. The 19th century doctor who first advocated washing one's hands between patients died ignored and in disgrace. Toxic mercury was used as medicine into the twentieth century. The Englishman who dared announce that blood circulated in the body was thrown in jail in the late 1800s.

In the 1940s, Dr. Frederick R. Klenner, M.D., the first doctor to use high dose vitamin C, successfully treated a large number of diseases with the vitamin.  Of course, his peer physicians attempted to discredit him.  His reply: "Some physicians would stand by and see their patient die rather than use ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) because in their finite minds it exists only as a vitamin." And so it has been, continuing into the present.

For the same amount of tuition dollars and the same amount of medical school time, Dr. Marcel and Dr. Connie chose to become naturopathic doctors instead of medical doctors, because we knew that the medicines we needed for our patients had already been placed on the Earth for our use by the Creative Intelligence (better known as God).  We didn't need to work with crude, synthetic, often fatal manufactured pharmaceuticals to help our patients heal.  Our job was to discover what was already available and use it appropriately.

At Pacific Naturopathic, we have successfully used intravenous high dose vitamin C for a number of conditions.  Please VISIT OUR WEB SITE to find out more about this remarkable therapy.

Hypnosis Miracles? - Accessing the Power
of the Mind to Heal

Jane 2013

"Miracles do not, in fact, break the laws of nature" C.S. Lewis

You know what I think is an everyday miracle? Hold a small sunflower seed in your hand and imagine what will happen when you plant it in the sun and water it faithfully. In a few months there will be a tall, beautiful flower standing straight to brighten your day. I know that the laws of nature will direct that seed to grow and grow.

Look up at the stars at night, how do they stay up in the sky? A miracle?  No, the laws of nature.

So here's the point...once we accept the laws of nature, it no longer seems a miracle at all and that puts it within our reach. So it is with our own healing processes. We don't understand them all, but our body knows how to heal itself. A broken bone closes. A cut forms a scab and then disappears. The actual healing process is not done by us or by a doctor; it is done by our own body.

What is being understood more and more through research and investigation is the potential of using the power of the mind to heal ourselves.

"A feeling sparked in your mind will translate as a peptide being released. Peptides regulate every aspect of your body, from digestion of food to the destruction of a tumor cell." Dr. Candace Pert

As we go through life we gather negative and positive experiences which lodge in our subconscious mind as beliefs.   For example, if you were consistently told as a child that you were never good enough, that is what you will believe about yourself no matter how successful you become. Any hint of failure is a catastrophe and very harmful.

When you have frequent negative messages, even from yourself, these can affect the body. Your unhealthy mind can create an unhealthy body . On the other hand, a positive, healthy mind can lead to a healthy body. Being able to change the negative mind through positive suggestions in hypnosis can actually cure an unhealthy body, as well. Generally, when that happens, especially if the condition has been serious, we call it a "miracle."

Hypnosis as a therapeutic process has been linked to many miraculous cures of human ailments.

How does this work?

Hypnosis works directly with the subconscious part of your mind which controls body functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, cellular health, and just about all the functions of the body. When old negative beliefs are broken during hypnosis, there is an opportunity to get rid of the negative programming and communicate hope and positive beliefs to the body's systems.

Consequently, the internal environment is able to unleash the innate healing which is available to repair the body.

Some force within us is capable of repairing the body. This fact is acknowledged even by the medical community, as indicated in the use of placebos in scientific medical studies.

In fact, many physicians and scientists assert, probably more than 90 percent of the diseases and disabilities we experience arise in our minds. Then it seems to reason that our minds can also heal us from them.

If our subconscious mind accepts a belief, it will be carried out in our bodies, and imagination has a powerful effect on the body. There are case studies and medical records of people who have died from the fear of being poisoned, even though there was no trace of it discovered in their bodies.

The body reacts to thoughts, ideas, and beliefs accepted by the subconscious mind. "We are what we think." That is proven truth. But what that means is that you have the power to change what you think and create miracles in your own life.

But that said, there are miracles that still defy explanation, and it has always been so.

Miracles are not contrary to nature, but only contrary to what we know about nature. - Saint Augustine

What St. Augustine calls nature is really God. I think that we have a human need to believe in miracles and that need and belief keeps a portal open to that which we will never completely understand.

Breast Thermography at
Pacific Naturopathic

- modern miracles in breast health evaluation -

thermography

In days gone by, breast thermography, ultrasound, mammography and MRI imaging would all have been thought to be magic or miracle. These technologies are of the age of energy, an age we newly entered when moving from Newtonian understandings to the understandings of Einstein. There is no doubt but what, moving forward, diagnostics which we have not yet dreamed of will become par for the course.

The newest breast imaging technique is Molecular Breast Imaging or breast specific gamma imaging. This technique uses a radioactive tracer. A nuclear medicine scanner is used to visualize areas in which the tracer is concentrated, with cancer cells taking up the tracer preferentially over normal cells. The downside is even greater radiation than mammograms.  The upside is that MBI is less expensive than an MRI and has fewer false positives.

Until the time that techniques such as MBI are perfected, and/or techniques which do not have potentially harmful side effects are discovered, breast thermography is the best choice for safe and economic screening, and can identify areas of suspicious physiologic change in the breasts. When further imaging is required, judicious use of anatomic screening methods makes far more sense than annual screening with methods which irradiate the breast tissue.

What We Offer  at the  Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

Our cancer patients often ask us to give them an estimate of the effectiveness of therapy at the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care. We respond that
our entire focus is on helping our patients stay healthy, upbeat and positive.

The truth is that the botanical and nutritional therapies we offer (including
intravenous vitamin C), although 'adjunctive' in nature, have powerful documented actions in decreasing inflammation, reducing tumor load and attacking cancer stem cells.

Our mind/body approaches are focused on transformation of experience.  And our bodywork approaches helpreduce muscular pain, resolve lymph drainage problems and relieve stress.

The hope we offer is not that of a miraculous cure,
although we are definitely open to miracles,
but the hope of a life lived to the fullest in dignity
and understanding, for however long that may be.

NCI launches largest-ever study of breast cancer genetics in black women

The largest study ever to investigate how genetic and biological factors contribute to breast cancer risk among black women launched today. This collaborative research project will identify genetic factors that may underlie breast cancer disparities. The effort is funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health.

The Breast Cancer Genetic Study in African-Ancestry Populations initiative does not involve new patient enrollment but builds on years of research cooperation among investigators who are part of the African-American Breast Cancer Consortium, the African-American Breast Cancer Epidemiology and Risk (AMBER) Consortium, and the NCI Cohort Consortium. These investigators, who come from many different institutions, will share biospecimens, data, and resources from 18 previous studies, resulting in a study population of 20,000 black women with breast cancer.

"This effort is about making sure that all Americans - no matter their background - reap the same benefits from the promising advances of precision medicine. The exciting new approaches to cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment ring hollow unless we can effectively narrow the gap of cancer disparities, and this new research initiative will help us do that," said Douglas R. Lowy, M.D., acting director of NCI. "I'm hopeful about where this new research can take us, not only in addressing the unique breast cancer profiles of African-American women, but also in learning more about the origin of cancer disparities."

Survival rates for women with breast cancer have been steadily improving over the past several decades. However, these improvements have not been shared equally; black women are more likely to die of their disease. Perhaps of most concern is that black women are more likely than white women to be diagnosed with aggressive subtypes of breast cancer. The rate of triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive subtype, is twice as high in black women as compared to white women.
The exact reasons for these persistent disparities are unclear, although studies suggest that they are the result of a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and societal factors, including access to health care. Large studies are needed to comprehensively examine these factors, and NCI is supporting several such efforts.

As part of the study, the genomes of 20,000 black women with breast cancer will be compared with those of 20,000 black women who do not have breast cancer. The genomes will also be compared to those of white women who have breast cancer. The project will investigate inherited genetic variations that are associated with breast cancer risk in black women compared to white women. In addition, researchers will examine gene expression in breast cancer tumor samples to investigate the genetic pathways that are involved in tumor development.

"This $12 million grant-in combination with previous investments-should help advance our understanding of the social and biological causes that lead to disparities in cancer among underserved populations," said Robert Croyle, Ph.D., director of NCI's Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), which is administering the grant. "A better understanding of the genetic contributions to differences in breast cancer diagnoses and outcomes among African-Americans may lead to better treatments and better approaches to cancer prevention."

"A number of studies have suggested that genetic factors may influence breast cancer disparities, so we're hopeful that this project can help to shed further light on this matter." said Damali Martin, Ph.D., program director for the DCCPS Genomic Epidemiology Branch. Dr. Martin's office is working directly with the grant recipients as well as the consortia groups that have been researching black women and breast cancer.

A new study of the relationship between physical activity and cancer has shown that greater levels of leisure-time physical activity were associated with a lower risk of developing 13 different types of cancer. The risk of developing seven cancer types was 20 percent (or more) lower among the most active participants (90 th percentile of activity) as compared with the least active participants (10 th percentile of activity).

These findings, from researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and the American Cancer Society, confirm and extend the evidence for a benefit of physical activity on cancer risk and support its role as a key component of population-wide cancer prevention and control efforts. The study, by Steven C. Moore, Ph.D., NCI, and colleagues, appeared May 16, 2016, in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Hundreds of previous studies have examined associations between physical activity and cancer risk and shown reduced risks for colon, breast, and endometrial cancers; however, results have been inconclusive for most cancer types due to small numbers of participants in the studies. This new study pooled data on 1.44 million people, ages 19 to 98, from the United States and Europe, and was able to examine a broad range of cancers, including rare malignancies. Participants were followed for a median of 11 years during which 187,000 new cases of cancer occurred.

The investigators confirmed that leisure-time physical activity, as assessed by self-reported surveys, was associated with a lower risk of colon, breast, and endometrial cancers. They also determined that leisure-time physical activity was associated with a lower risk of 10 additional cancers, with the greatest risk reductions for esophageal adenocarcinoma, liver cancer, cancer of the gastric cardia, kidney cancer, and myeloid leukemia. Myeloma and cancers of the head and neck, rectum, and bladder also showed reduced risks that were significant, but not as strong. Risk was reduced for lung cancer, but only for current and former smokers; the reasons for this are still being studied.

"Leisure-time physical activity is known to reduce risks of heart disease and risk of death from all causes, and our study demonstrates that it is also associated with lower risks of many types of cancer," said Moore. "Furthermore, our results support that these associations are broadly generalizable to different populations, including people who are overweight or obese, or those with a history of smoking. Health care professionals counseling inactive adults should promote physical activity as a component of a healthy lifestyle and cancer prevention."

Leisure-time physical activity is defined as exercise done at one's own discretion, often to improve or maintain fitness or health. Examples include walking, running, swimming, and other moderate to vigorous intensity activities. The median level of activity in the study was about 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week, which is comparable to the current recommended minimum level of physical activity for the U.S. population.

There are a number of mechanisms through which physical activity could affect cancer risk. It has been hypothesized that cancer growth could be initiated or abetted by three metabolic pathways that are also affected by exercise: sex steroids (estrogens and androgens); insulin and insulin-like growth factors; and proteins involved with both insulin metabolism and inflammation. Additionally, several non-hormonal mechanisms have been hypothesized to link physical activity to cancer risk, including inflammation, immune function, oxidative stress, and, for colon cancer, a reduction in time that it takes for waste to pass through the gastrointestinal tract.

Most associations between physical activity and lower cancer risk changed little when adjusted for body mass index, suggesting that physical activity acts through mechanisms other than lowering body weight to reduce cancer risk. Associations between physical activity and cancer were also similar in subgroups of normal weight and overweight participants, and in current smokers or people who never smoked.

The study was a large-scale effort of the Physical Activity Collaboration of NCI's Cohort Consortium, which was formed to estimate physical activity and disease associations using pooled prospective data and a standardized analytical approach.

"For years, we've had substantial evidence supporting a role for physical activity in three leading cancers: colon, breast, and endometrial cancers, which together account for nearly one in four cancers in the United States," said Alpa V. Patel, Ph.D., a co-author from the American Cancer Society. "This study linking physical activity to 10 additional cancers shows its impact may be even more relevant, and that physical activity has far reaching value for cancer prevention."

Other I.V. Therapies Offered at Pacific Naturopathic and the Hernandez Center

--I.V. therapy is not just for cancer patients--

Many people have already heard about intravenous vitamin C as a complementary cancer therapy to help stimulate the immune system as well as being directly cytotoxic to cancer cells. This is the most common therapy we use at the Hernandez Center for our cancer patients.

But intravenous therapy is not just for cancer patients.  More than half of our IV patients come for various "cocktails" to help them ward off infections and optimize their health.  We offer a number of individualized versions of the famous "Myers Cocktail." Read about the Myers Cocktail HERE

Other cocktails we offer promote brain health, assist the liver in its detoxification efforts, relieve the symptoms of chronic fatigue, help reduce stress, bring rapid relief from sinusitis, colds and flus, address immune system disorders, slow the progression of macular degeneration, reduce chronic pain and fibromyalgia and many other conditions.
