September is National Preparedness Month

The month long observance is designed to increase awareness of the importance of emergency preparedness, and encourage all individuals and communities to be informed and turn awareness into action by having an emergency preparedness family plan and stocking an emergency supply kit.

"Broward residents need to be prepared now. Historically this is the most active time of the year for hurricanes. Broward County has many great informational resources to help you prepare for an emergency. Please use these and keep your family safe," said Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca.

Upcoming preparedness activities include:

* Residents are encouraged to sign up in September for an upcoming SKYWARN Storm Spotters Training Class, hosted by Broward Emergency Management on October 12, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Broward Emergency Operations Center. SKYWARN weather spotters are part of a nationwide volunteer network to report significant weather events to the National Weather Service.

* Residents are encouraged to stay connected with their County before, during and after an emergency:

-- Encourage family and friends to subscribe to
Broward County Emergency Updates, important public safety information delivered via email before, during and after an emergency

-- Follow us on
Twitter.com/ReadyBroward and like us on Facebook.com/BrowardEMD   to be among the first to hear emergency updates

-- Visit our comprehensive emergency preparedness website at
emergency.broward.org   -- Call the Broward County Call Center at 311, or 954-831-4000, for updates and general preparedness information

-- Bookmark
gis.broward.org/mda on your smartphone or other mobile device so you can report damage to your home and help first responders assess impacts in the immediate aftermath of a storm
