City Council Meeting - May 16, 2018

The Council will hear special presentations honoring:
  • Affan Ansari, Arbor Day Poster Contest Winner
  • Mission's 16th year as a Tree City USA
  • National Police Week
  • National Public Works Week
  • Kids to Parks Day
  • Building Safety Month
  • Bike Month
The consent agenda includes the following items:
  • Minutes of the April 18, 2018 City Council Meeting, and the May 2, 2018 Finance & Administration Committee and Community Development Committee Meeting.
  • A resolution for the lease of cardio equipment at the Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center.
  • A proposal to repair damaged guardrails at 5500 Foxridge and at Lamar and Foxridge Drive.
The Council will also consider: 
  • A lot split at 5538 Maple Street.
  • The 2017 Audited Financial Statements.
  • Waiving the requirements of Municipal Code Chapter 205 relating to Public Exhibitions of Fireworks for Saturday, July 7, 2018 for the Mission Summer Family Picnic and the authorization to purchase fireworks for the event.
  • A task order for the design of Broadmoor Street from Johnson Drive to Martway Street.
The Council will also select committee chairpersons and vice chairpersons and consider the appointment of Alexis Penny, Ward II to the Sustainability Commission.

  • The latest edition of the Mission Magazine is out now! Pick up a hard copy at City Hall or the Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center, or at one of our local business sponsors, or read it online.
  • Kids to Parks is this Saturday! Bring the whole family to have some fun in nature right in Mission's own backyard in Streamway Park. The event is 10 a.m. to noon, with lots of fun nature-based activities. Visit the Facebook event page for more information.
  • Join in the fun of Big Monster Friday! Come to Victor X Andersen Park on Friday, May 25 from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Come for food, and fun activities celebrating all things monster. The event honors Alex Goodwin from the U.K. who is receiving treatments in Kansas City. More information on Alex's story and how to donate is available online here. Alex will also attend Coffee with a Cop at Twisted Sisters Coffee Shop on Friday, May 18 at 8:00 a.m.
  • Mission Businesses are encouraged to add themselves to the Mission Business Partnership membership list for news and issues impacting the business community. Send your name, business name, and email address to: [email protected].
  • The 2019 budget development process is underway. A Community Conversation on the Budget will be held Wednesday, May 30 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. A tentative listing of the meetings is available here.
  • Opening day of the Mission Market is Thursday, June 7. The market will be Thursday evenings, 4:30-8:00 p.m. June-September. Vendors, artists, makers, growers, sponsors, volunteers and community groups interested in participating with the Mission Market in 2018 are invited to write [email protected] or call 913-676-8368. Check out more information online at missionks.org/market.
  • The Annual Mission Sidewalk Sale will be Saturday, June 23 from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. There will be live music and great sales while you #shopmission.
  • Councilmembers Arcie Rothrock and Nick Schlossmacher will host a Ward 2 meeting Thursday, June 28 at 7 p.m. at the coffee shop at the Lucky Brewgrille. All are welcome.
  • Councilmembers Pat Quinn and Hillary Parker-Thomas will host a Ward 1 meeting also on Thursday, June 28 at 7 p.m. at the Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center. All are welcome. A full list of 2018 ward meetings is available online.
