2015 Mission West School for Ministry

The following education events are offered for commissioned ministers to meet their educational requirements.  These courses provide education within the 16 Areas of Ministerial Practice as required by the Disciples of Christ Polices and Criteria for the Ordering of Ministry.  Commissioned ministers must complete three (3) of these classes each year as required by Christian Church in the Southwest Educational Policy. Each class is offered three times, one time in each geographic area.  Participants are welcome to attend in any area, where and when convenient.

Ordained clergy are also encouraged to attend for continuing education and community building with fellow clergy.

Young Adult Disciples are invited to apply for XPLOR

The National Benevolent Association (NBA) of the Christian Church (Disciples), in partnership with several Disciples churches and regions, is now receiving applications for young adults interested in applying for the NBA XPLOR 2015-2016 year. To apply online, please go to www.nbacares.org/xplor.

What is NBA XPLOR? XPLOR is a faith-based, 10-month, congregationally hosted residency for 21- to 30-year-olds, who want to explore lives of care and service.

What does an NBA XPLOR Residency involve? Residents live under one roof within a diverse community of peers where they engage in communal and personal spiritual practices ranging from prayer to simple daily meals together. They care for and learn from others in community-service internships, and they relate to their host congregation. This communal lifestyle is not typical in our culture and yet it is designed to help residents recognize and practice a deeper connection with the people they encounter.

What does a typical week of Residency look like? A Residency week makes time for all facets of the internship experience: Four days of learning/experience in the service site, weekly Sabbath time set aside for personal and collective spiritual reflection, free time for personal care (grocery shopping, laundry, entertainment, and rest) and about six hours a week serving with the host congregation.

In 2014, XPLOR welcomed 12 young adults to live in intentional community and service at three XPLOR houses across the U.S.: St. Louis, Missouri; Hiram-Manuta, Ohio; and North Hollywood, California. More information (including videos from each Resident) can be found at

This is is the sixth of a monthly email newsletter sent to all participants in Mission West.  If you missed previous newsletters, you can see them in the  News section of our web site.  This newsletter will arrive on the first Tuesday of each month.  For those that would like paper copies please call the office at 806.358.9590 and we will mail you a paper version.

One of our goals in Mission West is to help connect churches to one another.  Rather than a model of ministry as a hub of a wheel, Mission West  hopes to work as an interconnected web.  One way to accomplish this goal is by sharing our stories and experiences in ministry.  If you have a ministry that you would like highlighted, please let me know , no later than the 25th of each month to be shared in following issues.

Blessings on your journey,

Karakay Kovaly
I hope you will join me for my ordination service on
Dec. 5th at the Chalice Abbey in Amarillo at 7pm
