HELP US MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Every month w e share with you the exciting work being done by the Mississippi Humanities Council and the organizations that we fund. As we come to the close of 2016, we urge to support the MHC so we can continue to make a difference in our state.

As Eudora Welty reminds us, the humanities give us the tools to understand ourselves, the places we com
e from, and our connection to the larger world. For the last 44 years, the Mississippi Humanities Council has helped our citizens explore the rich yet complicated history and culture of our state. We woul d like to mention a few of this past year's highlights. In 2016, the Mississippi Humanities Council:
  • Launched Idea
  • s on Tap, a series of humanities-based community discussions about such important issues as the brain drain and the state flag.
  • Created a new grant program, with support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, to fund grassroots efforts to explore the legacy of race in Mississippi.
  • Celebrated the centennial of the Pulitzer Prizes with a series of programsexploring Mississippi's literary and journalistic heritage.

  • Supported several life-changing  humanities programs for inmates at State Penitentiary at Parchman and the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility.
  • Brought the Smithsonian traveling exhibit Hometown Teams to six different sites around Mississippi.
We invite you to help us expand this important work by donating to the MHC. Click on the Donate button at the top of our website.

NEXT BICENTENNIAL GRANT DEADLINE JANUARY 3, 2017
In conjunction with Mississippi's bicentennial year, the Mississippi Humanities Council is partnering with Mississippi Development Authority's Visit Mississippi to oversee the Bicentennial Year Grants Program. The initiative will award up to $10,000 to individual public programs celebrating the state's historic year. The goal of this grant program is to inspire and empower local organizations throughout Mississippi to develop public programs documenting, interpreting and exploring community culture. Applications will be accepted on a monthly basis through November 2017, with grant deadlines falling on the first of each month (or the first business day following the first, if the first is a holiday). The next deadline is January 3, 2017. For more information, including grant guidelines and how to apply, please visit http://www.mshumanities.org/index.php/grants.
