Prayers for the Bush Family

Missouri Right to Life and National Right to Life mourn the death of President George H.W. Bush. The 41st president died last week at age 94.

During President Bush's term in office, his Administration urged the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade and allow states to pass laws to protect unborn children, stating, "protection of innocent human life - in or out of the womb - is certainly the most compelling interest that a State can advance."

President Bush opposed measures such as the so-called "Freedom of Choice Act," which would have imposed "an unprecedented regime of abortion on demand, going well beyond Roe v. Wade."

President Bush used the power of his veto to stop ten bills that contained pro-abortion provisions, including four appropriations bills which allowed for taxpayer funding of abortion.

He vowed he would "veto any legislation that weakens current law or existing regulations" pertaining to abortion."

President Bush also vetoed U.S. funding of the United States Population Fund (UNFPA), citing the agency's participation in the management of China's forced abortion program. He steadfastly refused to fund research that encouraged or depended on abortion, including transplantation of tissues harvested from aborted babies.

A summary of President Bush's pro-life record can be found here.
