Did You Know?
During the first 80 years of the Church's existence the intentional death of an unborn child was not mentioned. It fell under the 5th Commandment, "Thou shalt not kill." As the Church was growing and spreading to other countries and cultures, the need to address the issue arose. By the end of the first century, the Church had declared abortion to be a serious sin. The first-century Didache declared that "You shall not kill an unborn child or murder a newborn infant."  From this point until 1930 the entire Christian Church in all its branches condemned abortion without compromise. Various theologians speculated about the time of ensoulment of the fetus but the actual lawmaking body of the Church remained firm in its condemnation of abortion. ( source)
