MALALA YOUSAFZAI, THE PAKISTANI TEENAGER SHOT IN THE HEAD FOR SPEAKING OUT AGAINST THE TALIBAN IN SUPPORT OF GIRLS' EDUCATION, HAS BEEN AWARDED THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FOR 2014.

YOUSAFZAI, WHOSE FATHER IS A ROTARIAN, SHARES THE PRIZE WITH KAILASH SATYARTHI, A NATIVE OF INDIA WHO HAS WORKED TO COMBAT THE EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN FOR FINANCIAL GAIN, ACCORDING TO AN ANNOUNCE

ment in October from the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

In announcing the award, the committee praised Yousafzai for demonstrating that "children and young people, too, can contribute to improving their own situations." It noted that "through her heroic struggle she has become a leading spokesperson for girls' rights to education."

Yousafzai was a voracious reader and a star student at the Khushal School and College in Swat Valley when she began blogging, at the age of 15, about life in the valley and her opposition to a Taliban edict banning girls from attending school. Although she used a pseudonym, her identity was widely known, especially after she began granting TV interviews.

In October 2012, she was going home from school when a gunman barged onto her bus and shot her point-blank in the head. She was airlifted to Peshawar, where she endured a three-hour operation to remove the bullet and part of her skull. Six days later, she was flown to a hospital in Birmingham, England, that specializes in treating war casualties. Her plight became international news, and she has continued her activism since her recovery.

Yousafzai's father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, a member of the Rotary Club of Mingora Swat, has taken part in a number of the club's projects to improve the Swat Valley. He was instrumental in creating a nonprofit group called the Swat Relief Initiative, which purchased new equipment for a local hospital, built a water filtration plant, and established a mobile prosthesis clinic for people who had lost limbs to bombs.

Now in Birmingham, he serves as an adviser to former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, a UN special envoy for global education.

Malala Yousafzai's story was featured in the January issue of The Rotarian.

GETTING YOUR CLUB ON THE DISTRICT WEBSITE:

Did you know that the District 6880 website offers your club, and you as a Rotarian, many opportunities to promote your club, its events and accomplishments, as well as opportunities to network with other Rotarians and clubs in the District? All this is part of what your club's district dues pay for, so be sure you are taking advantage of each of these opportunites! Get your money's worth from your District and improve the service of your club to the community, and your service to your club!

  • The first step is to create an account with the rotary6880.org website. In the upper right hand corner of the site, there is a log-in link. If you don't already have an account, you'll see a link to   create a new account Fill out this information and the system will attempt to validate your information. You will recieve an email to verify that your email address is valid. Once you have responded to this email, the webmaster will check to be sure you are in the RI registry and that your basic info is correct. Once verified, you'll be able to log in to the system and take advantage of all the options below!
Should you have problems, email the webmaster at  webmaster@rotary6880.org
  • Once your account is approved and you are able to log in, go to the  community section and edit your profile to make sure all your information is complete and accurate. This is important so that other Rotarians will be able to connnect to you on as many levels as possible. Your profile information is only visible to members of the rotary6880 website, and only members of Rotary clubs in District 6880 are approved for membership. Even so, use discretion and only post information that you would be willing to divulge at a rotary club meeting or similar event.

Groups are a great way to collaborate with other Rotarians in the district on specific Rotary activities or ideas/concepts. But they don't have to be Rotary related! If you want to start a group about any idea or concept, feel free to do so. Just keep it family friendly.
  • Next, check out the  Events section of the Calendar and set up your club's recurring meeting time and place. You can follow the directions there to set this up.
