Transformational rituals are sometimes referred to as time outside time. By this we mean
that we have set aside a day or so for non-ordinary events to take
place. Examples include weddings, communions, bar mitzvahs, funerals,
birthdays, and anniversaries. Put simply it is a time when all
normal activities are purposefully suspended so that people may focus
all of their attention on life's milestones.
It is this very attention and the activity that takes place during the time outside time that creates the
special moments we can look back on later as having exceptional value
for our loved ones and us.
Why not give yourself the very same gift?
Every Christmas here in the US, there is a week that takes place about
now when the vast majority of people stop working and few appointments
are made. Most people are taking time out to be with their families.
Without subtracting from the family time, you can easily set aside a
few hours here and there to reflect on your own life and nurture your
spirit. These few hours can become a precious annual benefaction with
great influence on your life's direction.
Take the time to go for a walk, read a favorite poem, indulge in a
private meal, visit a special friend, reflect in your journal on how
things are going and what you would like to do new, better, or
differently to build a life of greater joy and happiness. Take time outside time to care for your
soul.
Nothing is at last
sacred but the integrity of your own mind.
