Noble Purpose

This morning I awaken in La Jolla, California, where I
will be working at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It was
founded in 1903 by members of the Scripps family and other community
members as the Marine Biological Association of San Diego. In 1912 it
joined the University of Southern California.
The mission of Scripps is to seek,
teach, and communicate scientific understanding of the oceans,
atmosphere, Earth, and other planets for the benefit of society and the
environment.
It is one of the great joys of my work to help
leaders and organizations that have a noble purpose, focusing their
efforts on a set of goals that contribute to the world. This more than
any other factor makes it possible to create win-win partnerships that
funnel resources into mission critical activity.
Lisa McLeod, a close personal friend wrote the book on
this, Selling wtih Noble Purpose: How to Drive Revenue and
Do Work That Makes You Proud.
She and I have had long talks about the value of noble purpose and
through her insights I have come to see noble purpose as a fundamental
reframe for our time. Not only is good for the world, it is a
distinguishing trademark of top performers. Leaders who champion a
noble purpose - who truly want to make a positive impact in the world -
consistently outperform those who are focused only on revenue or some
other self-serving metric.
What is your noble purpose? How will it come alive for you this week?
What difference will you make in the lives of others and for our
world? Know the answers to these questions and take pride in your
actions. Further, do good works and make our world that much better for
it.
The purpose of art is washing the dust of
daily life off our souls.
