Insurance: Watch out for Healthcare Changes!
A few years ago, I wrote about a great option for managing Healthcare expenses for the Business owner. The article, The Best Kept Secret for Managing Healthcare featured information on Health Spending accounts and Health & Welfare Trusts.

These vehicles help to provide a customized approach that’s more flexible than traditional benefits plans, and enables your healthcare expenses to be tax deductible for business owners. They have been a great addition for many self-employed people.

But change is coming! 2020 will be a year to ensure that your Healthcare expenses are covered, and your Health and Welfare trust is closed or converted. In fact, these were effective for managing healthcare for the unincorporated business. It is no longer an option, and they must be converted or closed by the end of the year. Otherwise, new tax implications could apply. The government intent is to tax these accounts as other trusts are taxed which negates any benefit to holding assets there for healthcare expenses in the future years.

If you are incorporated, there is very little change.

If you are NOT incorporated, please see your provider about changing your structure, and finding new opportunities to manage your healthcare benefits.
