Plains Conservation Center Welcomes Sheep and the Public
The Plains Conservation Center located near East Hampden Avenue and E-470 has become the temporary home to more than 100 sheep as part of a conservation grazing program. Two donkeys, Paco and Maria, are also on site, watching over the herd and keeping coyotes away. Grazing by hooved animals stimulates vegetative growth by fertilizing the soil and breaking it up; promoting moisture absorption.
The Plains Conservation Center officially reopens to the public this Saturday, June 24. Visitors can check out the sheep and donkeys, hike trails, explore the nature center and true-to-life tipis, sod houses and a one-room school house; you can also see rattle snakes, prairie dogs, pronghorn, coyotes and red-tailed hawks. Admission is free and hours of operation will be Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
