Jan 2, 2017      Finger Lakes Connected
Based on my New Year's Day adventure, I predict 2018 to be a year in which I can continue to enjoy kindness from strangers, the magic of the number 3, and the power of nature to heal! I waited until it warmed to 13 degrees and finally got Maverick out for a hike. Just once around the VA, I told him. I was bundled up but it really has been like a frozen tundra lately plus lots to do before school starts (I live with procrastinators who find it enjoyable to wait until the night before to tell me of things like school projects). I figured one quick time around and done. So I thought.... Well I got out there at 3:03pm and pulled the neck warmer up for warmth, but my breathing kept fogging up my glasses. So I took them off and put them in my coat pocket. It was actually kinda fun looking around and taking in the path we know so well with just the unenhanced vision God gave me. It made me quite grateful actually- to see things so differently. So near the end I reached in my coat pocket and ummmmmm hmmmmm no glasses! I yell out to Maverick to find my glasses but he's not as smart as he looks bc no luck there. What else could I do but back track? The problem, of course, is I can't see well enough without the damn things to find them! Oy. So, I went another time around the VA finding many sticks, but no glasses. Naturally, no one else comes in their right mind when it is this frigid. Hmmmm. Luckily I wasn't too cold bc I dressed appropriately. At this point, I convinced myself it was time for new glasses and (being the first of the year) new insurance would kick in so all was good in my mind. Except, how would I drive home so blind? I call Sean to get my backup pair I think from 1990's which I think is in our bathroom somewhere so he can come save me. Just then I saw a car. Or a big red blob moving towards my big blue blob. It was another fearless soul! I told Sean hold that thought I'll call you back. Stranger calls out ...how are you? I explain situation. Blind. Dropped glasses. Somewhere. Snow is drifting. Can't follow tracks bc they're covered. Anyway....Thank you, tall man Torsten and black dog Addie for walking around the THIRD and final time w me to somehow find the glasses! Phew. Long story. It was a long journey but it was so invigorating in the crisp sunshine and it gave me such a lift on a day where I could barely drag myself out. Ok so moral of the story is... in 2018, trust life, 3's, and nature. Ahhhhhh! Happy New Year!
Peace & Blue Skies, Donna Bennett

FLCC launches new, flexible hospitality programs

The state Education Department has approved new Finger Lakes Community College programming that provides more flexibility and choice for students pursuing careers in hospitality and tourism.

The state approved a new hospitality and tourism management associate, or two-year, degree along with three one-year certificates in hotel and resort management, tourism management and food and beverage management.

The certificates can be taken alone or as a track within the degree program. Students also have the option to start in one of the one-year certificate programs and then work toward the two-year degree.

"This new approach to educational programming allows younger students to explore options in hospitality and then specialize, using one of the three tracks," said Jamie Rotter, assistant professor of culinary arts. "It also provides an opportunity for people in the workforce to come back to school for just one year to upgrade their skills in one of these areas."

Stay Healthy this Season -
Turn down the heat. Dry air disrupts the protective mucous layer in your nose that helps keep germs out. This makes it easier for viruses to invade your body. Outside cold air doesn't hold much moisture either.
The fix: Try a twice daily saline rinse to reestablish the moisturizing barrier and wash germs away. You may feel a small humidifier does the same thing, but they won't really help unless they are within 12 to 18 inches from your face.
This health tip is brought to you by Canandaigua The Medicine Shoppe, Canandaigua, NY.
