FromJenGreetings!

We are very excited to announce that Girls on the Run of Happy Valley has been officially approved as a council!

After a year of research, community interviews and preparation the Steering Committee of seven members received news on Monday, August 1 that all their hard work had paid off.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped us complete the application process and to those who continue to support our endeavors.  We have been met with an overwhelmingly positive response and can't wait to really get things rolling!

What's next for us?  Our administrative staff will attend training in Charlotte, North Carolina with intentions to bring our pilot season to State College Area School District in spring 2012.

What you can do?  If you are not seeing GOTR of Happy Valley information in your schools, place of worship, place of business, fitness club, etc please drop us an email so we CAN get our information there.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Hinkle, Co-Administrator

HERStory by Carol Baney

As Director of Operations for the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, there are not many logistical tasks that I have not faced.  When asked to join the Girls on the Run Steering Committee, I saw this as a great opportunity to build an organization from the ground up and at the same time support a wonderful program.

As a Bellefonte native, I was especially excited at the possibility of bringing GOTR to the Bellefonte community. Even though Bellefonte is only nine miles up the road from State College, there are a number of services and activities that Bellefonte residents do not have at their disposal. It's our intention to bring GOTR to those outlying communities.

Every evening when I was growing up, my brother and I played outside with the neighbor kids until dark. We sat around telling stories, played games and just enjoyed being crazy kids. Today, too many days are spent inside playing Nintendo or Xbox, watching tv or on the computer. There is no desire to play outside with other kids and develop the skills that come from group activities. Girls on the Run gets girls up and moving, showing them what fun can be had when you get outside and do something!

As a woman, I believe Girls on the Run can help young girls by teaching skill building lessons; dealing with body image, peer pressure, making healthy decisions and contributing to the community.

We're making good things happen for the girls in your community and mine! Learn. Dream. Live. Run.

Girls on the Run is a prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. Designed for girls ages 8-13, the GOTR curriculum encourages positive social, emotional, and physical development through the combination of training for a 5k run and activities that teach girls how to make positive decisions and avoid self-destructive behaviors.

Would like to see Girls on the Run at your school???! Sometimes its all about who ya know!   Give us some direction, tell us who to talk to about offering the GOTR program at your school. Please email jnhinkle13@gmail.com. We will thoughtfully and professionally follow up any leads you give us!

About Girls on the Run of Happy Valley
ABOUT
In case you didn't know...Girls on the Run is a developmentally focused youth sport program focused on the cognitive, emotional, social growth of girls between the ages of 8 and 13. The program combines life-changing lessons and physical fitness and culminates in the girls running a 5K race.

An international organization, Girls on the Run has positively impacted the lives of girls all over the world through positive messaging and self-respect building curriculum wrapped in a package of physical education.

Some area women got together with a shared goal of bringing this extraordinary nonprofit organization to Central Pennsylvania. Centre County needs a Girls on the Run chapter to help assure that the young girls of this area are armed with the tools they need to thrive!
