More Police Deployments
61% Chicagoans Back North Branch Park
General Iron Continues Nighttime Operations
SNA Lincoln Yards Meeting Tonight
Dear Neighbors,

Mayor Emanuel and Police Superintendent Johnson have announced the deployment of eight additional officers to the 18th District.

These additions make a total of more than 100 new officers added to the both 18th and 19th District Chicago Police Departments in the last year.
61% Chicagoans favor the North Branch Park Preserve

According to a recent City Wide poll, 61% of Chicagoans back the development of the North Branch Park Preserve on the east bank of the Chicago River, where General Iron is located today. This mirrors the strong support for new public parkland in a survey taken by Alderman Hopkins (2nd) and the endorsement of a park by the editorial boards of the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times.

General Iron Continues Nighttime Operations -
Future of Property Uncertain

I am unhappy to report an attempt to prevent General Iron from operating around -the- clock was thwarted in a City Council Committee. The City's Law Department contends the power to restrict General Iron's hours rests with the Chicago Department of Health. My colleague Ald. Hopkins (2nd) tried to rescind an unusual waiver that allows General Iron to keep nighttime and early morning hours. At the Health Committee hearing, I pressed the City to turn over site inspection reports of the facility. After months of these requests, we were again promised the materials would become available. In July, General Iron was notified it was in violation of its federal permits. Under the law, offenders are given an unspecified amount of time to come into compliance.

General Iron says it is moving in 2020 to a new facility. The property is now for sale. We believe steps must be taken by the city to acquire this property or rezone to ensure it becomes a public asset as the backbone of the North Branch Park. I intend to partner with my fellow neighboring Aldermen to initiate such action and bring a long term vision to the transformation taking place on our doorstep. The General Iron site should be used to balance the unprecedented pressures such massive development brings. Please join your neighbors and lend your energy and voice to the timely effort to create a public park. You can learn more about what you can do at www.northbranchparkpreserve.org.
