Strings, Strings and more Strings!
Bakers, Chaperones and Volunteers Needed

February and March are busy months for Orchestra. Please mark your calendars, select one of the volunteer opportunities below then contact Orchestra Rep Sylvia Schweinberger or Director Brittany Newell to let them know when you can help. Thank you in advance!

NW Region Strings Concert - Wednesday, February 15 at 7:00 PM at BHS
We need lots of parent volunteers and enough baked goods to feed an army of elementary and middle school students! 
Use the red Sign Up button to select your preferred shift:
5:00 - 6:00 PM - serve pizza before the concert and set up chairs and stands
6:45 - 8:15 PM - work the bake sale table before, during and after the concert 
8:00 - 8:30 PM  - tear down chairs and stands. BHS students will also be helping.

Call time for BHS Students is 5:20 PM 
Dress:  Students will wear their BHS Orchestra t-shirt and jeans. 
Purpose: To show the community the progression of the SPS instrumental music program from elementary level through high school. Please sign up and lend a hand!

Elliott Bay  Orchestra Festival - Thursday, March 2 during the school day
5 - 6 Parent Chaperones Needed: to ride the bus to Garfield HS, attend the festival, eat lunch, etc. for the day.  Depart BHS at 8:00 AM and return at 3:15 PM. Contact Sylvia or Brittany to help with this event.

Orchestra Tour to Portland & Gresham Orchestra Festival - March 10 - 12
2 Females and 1 Male Chaperone Needed:  Ride the bus with us down to Portland, and take part in our weekend tour. Cost for chaperones is $200.  Depart BHS Friday March 10 at 6:30 AM, return to BHS Sunday March 12 by 6:00 PM.  Contact Sylvia or Brittany to help with this event.

Chamber Orchestra at SPS Board Meeting  - Wednesday, April 19 at 3:00 PM
4 - 5 Parent Drivers Needed: to transport students to and from the John Stanford Center in SODO for this televised performance. Return to BHS by 6:00 PM.  Contact Sylvia or Brittany to help with this event.


58th Annual  
Spaghetti Dinner 
Welcome to the 60s!

The 58th annual Ballard Performing Arts Spaghetti Dinner is Saturday, February 4th from 5:30 to 8:30 PM. It's a casual and friendly dinner and show - every choral and instrumental group at Ballard will perform a piece from the 60s. There will also be a sneak peek of the upcoming musical, Les Misérables! Please join us in the Commons for a memorable evening in support of Ballard Performing Arts. Take a chance on the raffles, meet other Ballard families, and, if the spirit moves you, bring out your grooviest attire! 

"Help!  I need somebody..."
Please volunteer for a shift during the Spaghetti dinner. The performance schedule is listed on the Sign Up Genius to avoid any conflicts. Students will receive service hours for volunteering.

$15/adult, $10/student and Free/5yrs and under. Please note - all Ballard Performing Arts students must buy a ticket in order to eat dinner. 


Band News and Calendar Updates
Pep Band at the Varsity Basketball Games, Saturday, January 28
Pep Band will perform for the last time this season at Saturday night's Varsity Basketball games against Nathan Hale.  Call time is 4:15 PM.  Please wear your band T-shirts. Warning for Pep Band families - this game is likely to sell out.

UPDATE: UW Jazz Festival this Saturday - One Chaperone Still Needed!
All Jazz 1 students must arrange their own transportation for this event. Jazz Combo students must be on the Meany Hall stage by 11:30 AM. All other Jazz 1 students must be in their seats in Meany Hall by 12:30 PM. We are still looking for one adult chaperone, in additional to Mr. James, to attend this event. Please contact Ingrid Riley to volunteer.

NEW: Band and Percussion Rehearsal on Friday, February 3
Band and Percussion students must attend rehearsal after school on Friday, February 3rd from 3:30 - 4:15 PM to prepare for the Spaghetti Dinner.

NEW: Marching Band at 8th Grade Open House - Thursday, February 9
Call Time is 5:45 PM. Change into Marching Band Uniforms, perform from 6:30 - 7:00 PM in the Gym then change out of uniforms.  We are need of 6 - 7 parents to help with uniform check in at 7:00 PM.  Please contact Ingrid Riley to volunteer.

Carnegie  Hall Tickets Are Available
Concert tickets are now on sale for the Wind Ensemble's International Music Festival (IMF) performance at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday, April 11, 2017.  Please be aware there are two different IMF concerts that day:

1:00 PM  Afternoon Concert. The Wind Ensemble will only perform during this concert.
8:00 PM  Evening Showcase and Awards Ceremony. The Wind Ensemble will be in attendance but will NOT be performing during this event.

Tickets for each concert are sold separately ($20 or $30 plus service fee) and may be purchased directly from the Carnegie Hall website .  The concerts are expected to sell out so purchase your tickets today!  All students should have paid for the entirety of their New York trip ($1800).  If you haven't already done so, place your check in the black box in the music room or  pay online here . All NW - All State Music Honor Ensembles
Performances on Sunday, February 19th

Congratulations to the four Concert Choir members and one Chamber Orchestra member who were selected from 4600 musicians to participate in the prestigious NAfME All-Northwest High School Honor Ensembles. The choirs will perform at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 19 at the Hyatt Grand Ballroom in the Bellevue Sheraton Hotel. The Symphony Orchestra will perform at 5:30 PM on Sunday, February 19 at Benaroya Hall. Tickets are available at the door for $25.

Solo and Ensemble Competition Details
Recital for Students Performing Vocal Solos - February 1 

Students who are performing a vocal solo in the Solo and Ensemble competition will have a recital at BHS on Wednesday, February 1st. Students may sign up for either the 6:30 or the 7:30 PM recital in the Earl Kelly Performing Arts Center.  Be advised that this is the day between semesters and there is no school that day. 

All Participating Students Must Pay the Competition Fee
Students participating in the Solo and Ensemble Competition must pay the $18 (single time slot) or $36 (double time slot) fee. Please make checks payable to Ballard Performing Arts. If you are unsure whether or not you have paid, please contact Jill Hansen.

Les Misérables Opening Weekend Gala
Saturday, March 18th at 5:00 PM
Reserve your seats now for an unforgettable night of dinner and theatre on Saturday, March 18th. You will enjoy a relaxing meal and mocktail in the BHS Commons with fellow theatre fans then stroll on over to the Earl Kelly Performing Arts Center to your prime reserved seat at Les Misérables.

Performances are Thursday - Saturday, March 16, 17, 18, and 23, 24, 25 at 7:30 PM and Sunday, March 26 at 2:00 PM. If you plan to attend the Saturday, March 18th performance but not the Gala, you must purchase your ticket on the showtix4u website. Don't delay, the show is sure to sell out!

Les Misérables Reminders: Program Ads & T-shirts
  • Program Ads - All cast members and all Thespians (even if not in the show) must sell at least one program ad. Paperwork was handed out at rehearsal and is also available here.
  • T-shirts - Many cast, crew and orchestra members still need to pay for their Les Misérables T-shirts ($10 - cash or checks payable to BPA). Students may use their student account money but ONLY if they let Mr. Riley know.
  • Work Call - every Saturday from 10:00 - 4:00 PM - Students only!

Solo & Ensemble preparation masterclasses:  get ready, feel steady!  Group sessions with individual focus on Sunday 1/29 in Wallingford. More information here.

New Year's voice lesson special:  If in-class voice lessons don't work for you, consider taking lessons outside of school. Dr. Stacey Mastrian is based in Wallingford and is offering a New Year's lesson special of $50 for an initial voice lesson for new students (a $25 discount!) through February 15, 2017.
