More Success, More Strength
November 2017
October came to an end with a flurry of activity. LDB President Kenneth L. Marcus was officially nominated for the position of Assistant U.S. Secretary of Education for Civil Rights. The fight against BDS also saw several positive events, including anti-BDS laws at both Wisconsin and Maryland. The Austrian National Union of Students also officially denounced BDS. These stories and more all appear in this edition of the Brandeis Brief below.

Boston Litigator Jeffrey S. Robbins ESQ., Appointed to Brandeis Center's Board of Directors

The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law (LDB) announced the election of leading Boston litigator Jeffery S. Robbins Esq., to the Center's Board of Directors. Mr. Robbins, who previously served as a member of LDB's Legal Advisory Board, was elected during LDB's Annual Meeting on October 12.

The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law (LDB) is pleased to welcome its newest Civil Rights Legal Fellow, Roee Talmor. Talmor's appointment marks LDB's continued expansion, as the Washington, D.C.-based civil rights group grows to face the resurgent problem of anti-Semitism on American University campuses.
 
Bulgaria Adopts Definition of Anti-Semitism

On Thursday, October 19th, the Bulgarian government announced that it had adopted the working definition of anti-Semitism used by the International Alliance for Holocaust Remembrance (IHRA). 

Wisconsin Governor Walker Issues Anti-BDS Executive Order

On October 30 th , Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker signed an anti-BDS measure,  Executive Order 261 , into law.  The Executive Order states that agencies may not  "execute a contract with a business entity if that entity is engaging in a boycott of Israel. Further, agencies shall reserve the right to terminate any contract with a business entity that engages in a boycott of Israel during the term of the contract."

Maryland Governor Hogan Signs Anti-BDS Executive Order

On October 24th, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed an anti-BDS bill, Executive Order 01.01.2017.25, into law.  The Executive Order prohibits all executive branch agencies from entering into "contracts or conducting official state business with any entity unless they certify that they will not engage in a boycott of Israel during the duration of the contract." 

Austrian Student Union Denounces BDS

On October 13 th , 2017 the Austrian National Union of Students (ÖH) announced that it had become the first national student union to officially pass a resolution denouncing BDS. The ÖH also adopted a version of the  International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA ) definition of anti-Semitism.
