Happy Birthday Jenn!
Today is Second Mile Haiti founder, Jenn Schenk's birthday! Today she turns 25!
In the weeks leading up to her birthday Jenn has been planning and preparing for the installation of solar panels on the Second Mile Haiti property. She has jumped into this challenge (despite having no prior knowledge of generators and inverters, or electricity for that matter!) with the same motivation and enthusiasm she's shown in tackling every other project at the land. Jenn excels at her role as project manager, keeper of the books, and director of the staff. She's a star and we are so proud of what she has accomplished in her first quarter century of life. Did I mention she's also a great driver?
On Jenn's 24th birthday we were asking for "birthday blocks" to construct a wall around the property. This was our very first project! Can you believe it?
A year later and we are asking for "birthday wire." If you want to bless Jenn on her birthday, feel free to donate to this project.
Wire, would make her day! And we need lots of it!
$20 = 80 feet of electrical wire
$50 = 200 feet
$100 = 400 feet
$250 = 1000 feet
The birthday goal = 10,600 feet for $2,650

We are looking for someone with expertise in agriculture, farming, and generator maintenance. An all-round handy person would be a great addition to the team on the ground in Haiti. If you know of anyone interested in serving in this way for a commitment of one to three months feel free to share our information.

New!!! Gardens and Goats
How will we practice sustainibility? Through growing as close to 100% of the ministry's food needs as possible! Check out the modest start we've made in this vein.
Recently we...
hired a tractor to till the back half of the property
(almost 2 acres)
purchased vegetable seeds and fruit trees
and used donations received from the "Holiday Catalog" to purchase the first of several goats
We are so thankful God gave us the means to grow nutritious foods in our "backyard."

BUILDING PROGRESS
Here's what happened last month at the land...
Building: Office and Workshop
Project: These two rooms which are situated just adjacent to the the Education Center building, got themselves a cement roof last week! Stay tuned for pictures of the completed Education Center! It's time to hire some teachers/mentors. :)
The mothers of children recovering at Second Mile Haiti will go to daily education and skills classes at the Education Center. The office will be used by the teachers and coordinators of these programs and the workshop will be a place for the moms to practice their acquired skills (ex. sewing, crochet, typing)
 | Daton, working the cement by hand to assure an even finish. |
Building: Security Tower
Project: A roof for the security tower (top) and a door for the depot (bottom). Now that the depot has a door we can begin storing supplies for the gardens!
Just like every other organization based in Haiti, Second Mile will have a night guard for added security. This building sits right at the edge of the property mid-way between the front and back halves.

Electrical Team Update
The electrical team from I-tec (itec.org) is coming April 13th. Whew! Initially we anticipated their arrival for April 6th so this gives us one more week to prepare the property and raise funds. As we speak, they are building an inverter system in the States that they will ship it to Haiti before their trip.
They will spend just one week in Haiti. The first few days will be spent at a nearby hospital and the last few days on the Second Mile Haiti compound.
They will be doing all the "groundwork" on their first trip. This involves establishing a system of electrical wires, installing outlets and switches, and connecting the electrical appliances to the battery/generator/inverter system. They will also share with us their official estimation of our power demand, in watts. This will help us determine how many solar panels we will need to effectively power our facility with energy from the sun!
The I-tec team plans to make a second trip to Second Mile Haiti as soon as we are able to have the solar panels purchased, shipped, and delivered.
If all goes as planned, Jenn and Amy will head to the nearby Dominican Republic on Tuesday to purchase the generator, batteries, and electrical wire. We still need funds to purchase electrical wire, hence the plea for "birthday wire."
Lastly, if anyone knows of a team or individual heading to Haiti before April 17th it would be helpful to have some electrical supplies carried into the country such as outlets, switches, and breakers. Your prayers are appreciated in all aspects of this big and exciting endeavor!
