Micah Building (First UMC) - Walk to Rally Site

This Saturday we're participating as an Open Door Churches community in the "Families Belong Together Rally" at the Families Belong Together event in Wilson Park at the Capital building.

We'll gather at 10:45 a.m. on the steps of the Micah Building (next to FUMC) to walk over together.

It's so important to stand up for those who are being hurt and especially for those who are unable to stand up for themselves. Stronger together, let's combine our voices!

Vacation Bible School
Monday, July 9th through Thursday, July 12th
Morningside UMC
9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Don't miss out! Have you registered your youngsters yet... Your children? Your grandchildren? Your neighbor's children?  This is sure to be the highlight of their summer.

All kids from age 4 to 5th grade graduates are invited to four days of venturing onto an uncharted island where we will learn about how Jesus carries us through all of life's storms such as loneliness, struggles, feeling powerless, and worrying.  Each day as we sing, craft, snack and use our imaginations, we'll see how Jesus is always there for us!

Registration forms are available in the church hall on the Youth Bulletin Board and on the Facebook event page.

Volunteers are still needed, too! If you have a heart for kids and want to venture onto an uncharted island, too, call the church!
Worship Time Discussion & Feedback
Time Change Proposal

Morningside UMC is part of Preaching Circuit #2 for Open Door Churches. What that means is that most Sunday's I start my day at Trinity UMC's 9:00 worship service and after I deliver my sermon, I head over to Morningside UMC. I get here around 9:45 and am here for the entire service, worship leading and preaching, and then leave about 11:20 to Englewood UMC's 11:15 service to preach there. As far as this schedule goes for me, it has been fine, although sometimes challenging to make sure I leave Morningside on time.

The part of the schedule that is not working is Trinity's service beginning at 9:00am. The time is too early for a good number of the members and their worship attendance has suffered. At the Open Door Churches Board meeting and with the clergy, we have begun to look at solutions to this. One possibility is for Trinity to begin at 9:30am and Pastor Sandy believes this time change will make a difference for them.

What that change means of us is to either leave our time at 10:00 and have Lay Leadership begin the service and I will arrive after it has begun (10:15) or to move our service to 10:30 allowing me to be present for the beginning. We are also looking at making an adjustment to the worship time at Englewood and there is a very good chance that I will have more time to be present at Morningside following our worship. Englewood is in the process of discerning what the future of their worship life and ministry will be.

It looks like the earliest we would look at making this change is September 16, 2018; but at this time, that date is rather fluid.

I welcome your feedback on this possibility. Some committees at church have begun discussing it. Feel free to give me a call, 503-290-6653 or email me, [email protected]
There may be time for a church discussion of this on July 29 following worship - I will let you know.

If you'd prefer and you are ready to share your preference, you're invited to take our ONE QUESTION/ONE CLICK survey by clicking here:  WORSHIP TIME SURVEY

Blessings,

Pastor Wendy

Open Door Churches Young Adults July Schedule

The Open Door Churches Young Adult Group is made up of college students and young professionals ranging in age from 18-29 who are exploring questions of faith together. The group meets every Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 at IKE Box.

This past month we have spent time talking about the future of The UMC as The Commission on A Way Forward has been meeting and as statements come out from The Council of Bishops. The young adults also attended the Table Talk event hosted by the conference in which they engage in round table discussion about the church's future. As news continues to come out we will continue in our conversations. Thank you for your continued support of The Open Door Young Adults. Please contact Pastor Alyssa with any questions.

Annual Church Retreat Day
Sunday, August 5th, 10 AM

It's time, once again, for our Morningside Annual Retreat Day. Back by popular demand... we will enjoy our day at the North Falls Meeting Hall at Silver Falls State Park.

We will begin our Church Retreat Day with singing and communion at 10 AM followed by a Potluck Brunch at the North Falls Meeting Hall. The afternoon will be the time to enjoy activities - from table games (inside the meeting hall) to outdoor games, to kayaking and hiking. There's something for everyone!

We will end the day with a yummy BBQ dinner followed by a campfire and s'mores (depending on the weather).

We have reserved the North Falls Meeting Hall which is close to a playground, Nature Play Area and link to the Trail of 10 Falls. The parking and meeting hall are accessible and available for all to enjoy.

Come for Worship and Brunch or for the whole day. Invite your family, friends and neighbors. Carpool Sign-up Sheets will be coming soon.

We're kicking off the registration process now!  CLICK HERE to download a registration form or pick one up at church on Sunday.

Reminder... there will be NO worship scheduled here (at Morningside) that Sunday.
Open Door Churches Worship & Celebration
Sunday, September 9th, 10 AM

Planners are planning... Excitement is building... We are getting closer and closer to our big Open Door Churches Worship & Celebration.

We are thrilled to have Renee Cornwell representing Morningside on the ODC planning team.  She reports that the planning team is presently focused on identifying what rentals will be needed, possibly expanding the handicap parking area, mobility access to the amphitheater, possible shuttle service, plans for a potluck, worship service, kids activities, music and much, much more!

Be sure to mark this on your calendars and keep watching for updates from the planning team.  Reminder... there will be NO worship scheduled here (at Morningside) that Sunday.
