AMothers Hold The World Together

Delivering my first child was an act of ferocity, of keeping on keeping on. Any woman who has given birth knows the truth of this. There is no way to step aside, to pay someone else, or to avoid the mighty passage that is birth. And for most this ferocious maternity carries through for a lifetime where the mother watches over, assists, prays, cajoles, grieves or even steals for her children. They are never out of her heart.

For impoverished mothers worldwide ferocious maternity means going to heroic efforts, sometimes daily, to feed children and protect them from a predatory world. The women we work with in Uganda are almost all mothers, having produced children in their teen years many from forced sexual experiences. Many also adopt orphans from relatives or neighbors who have passed away. While their stories are heartbreaking they are also filled with determination, success, and helping one another to make sure the children are safe, fed and educated.

This Mother's Day we honor mothers everywhere. For those mothers in the BeadforLife project we honor your everyday selflessness and sacrifice for your children.

We all have only one mother. Whether she is living or passed on we hope you will take a moment to remember her with gratitude for the life she gave you and the countless unseen acts of kindness and love. We hope you enjoy this photo essay on some of the mothers in the BeadCircle.

Happy Mothers' Day.

Kids and Moms Make A Difference:

Several of the photos below are of moms and their kids giving a BeadParty. It is a terrific way to have fun with children while experiencing the joys of making a difference to others.  Kids find it is special and engaging to work with mom, to arrange beads, to sell them, to plan a party and invite their friends. Sometimes we have three generations give a BeadParty, each inviting their friends for a wonderful multi generation party!

"I want to say what a wonderful privilege it was for my daughter and I to be able to do a small part to help your organization and these wonderful ladies. They are such an inspiration."

Meet the Etana Artists: Favour Group
The Etana Necklace is made exclusively by BeadforLife's Favour Group. The 60 members in this group come from four major slums in the outskirts of Kampala. For years they were isolated by poverty and hardship, but have found community, support and hope through BeadforLife. The women of Favour selected their name because "it means good things."

Meet Nabunya Sarah

Sarah is a member of the Favor Group which makes the Etana. She is 32 years old and a single mother. After her brother passed away, she began to care for his daughter as well as her own children.

Sarah says that before BeadforLife, she didn't have many friends, staying away from others since she did not trust the world. Now, as a member of Favour, she has found community. "We do everything together. They are good company." And together they are leaving poverty behind.
