Mothers are people too!

As toddlers and kids, then as young children, we look to our moms with starry eyes, soaking in every ray of light that shines from their faces. As we turn six and seven and eight, our moms become ultimate heroes. "You are the best mom in the world!" our school scrapbook pages would often spell out.

As we turn nine and ten, as we start exploring and discovering our own individuality, we try to carve out our own space and mom sometimes gets in the way. This is when the first signs of friction bubbles up. Yet at this point the respect and love, and the dependence, keep our attitude in check. When we become teenagers and we realize that we already know all that there is to learn in the universe, we start developing attitudes and we incline to be combative and sometimes rude to our dear mom. We start seeing faults in her and some of the idol-worshiping  is crushed by the reality of human frailty.

To this point this is all natural. There is a problem however; many teens do not really grow up as they enter adult life and cannot appreciate that their parents are facing countless personal and circumstantial challenges. They want their mom and dad to forever be the super-mom and super-dad.

We must come to appreciate that the world is a very rough place, and parents are struggling as much as we are; so we have to always give our mom, and dad, the respect and co-operation they deserve, and the space they need to negotiate the many twists and turns that life puts in front of them.

A very important life lesson is "Moms (and Dads) are people too".

For those fortunate enough to have the blessing of a mom still with them, cherish every moment you can spend in their presence, understand and forgive their faults, and realize that, as they are, you will be.
