Mountain Treasures Hike:
Andrews Cove & Rocky Mountain

Hike Location:  Andrews Cove, north of Helen, GA, on Highway 75

Outing Description: This hike will be a two-fer! Everyone will start with Hike A, which begins with a 2-mile botanical walk from Andrews Cove Campground (elev. 1820'), climbing steadily up to Indian Grave Gap (elev. 3113'), where we'll meet up with the Appalachian Trail and have lunch. After lunch, our two hike groups will separate. Hike A folks will return, backtracking the 2 miles downhill to Andrew's Cove Campground. Hike B folks will hit the AT southbound at Indian Grave Gap and climb for another 1.5 miles to the top of Rocky Mountain (elev. 4017'), where we'll pause to enjoy the views and rock outcrops and then head on down another 1.5 miles into Unicoi Gap (elev. 2949').

When you register, please indicate whether you will do the shorter "Hike A" or the longer version, "Hike B." 
 
Hike Date:  Wednesday, August 16th, 2017
 
Meeting Time, Place and Directions:  We'll be directly north of Helen, GA, which is located about 2 hours north of Atlanta.

Hike A: Meet at 10:00am at Andrews Cove Campground, on State Highway 75, about 6.5 miles north of Helen, GA. Drive through the campground to the very back, where you should see co-leader Anne Hughes. She'll have a campsite rented where we can accommodate more parking. Google map link here.

Hike B: Meet at 9:15am at Unicoi Gap on State Highway 75, about 10 miles north of Helen, GA. Co-leaders Sue Harmon and Becky McSwain will give hikers a ride down to Andrews Cove Campground to start the hike. Google map link here.
 
Distance and Difficulty
Hike A: A total of 4 miles, in and out, with the first 2 miles a steady climb at a moderate pace. The usual tree roots and rocks and a few small wet crossings are expected. This hike is moderate to strenuous, as it requires steady exertion to climb 1293 feet in elevation gain over a length of two miles.

Hike B: A total of 5 miles, the first 3.5 miles a continuous climb, gaining 2197 feet in elevation, including steep stone steps. The last 1.5 miles is downhill. This hike is strenuous.

Duration of Hike: We should be back to our cars by 3:00 to 4:00pm, depending on your hiking pace and choice of hikes.
 
Participant Limit: 20
 
What to Bring and Wear: Lunch, a sit-upon, plenty of water, rain gear, sturdy footwear, hiking poles if you need them.  If allergic to bees/wasps, remember to bring your meds/epi-pen.
 
Cancellation: Participants will be notified by 6:00pm the evening before the hike if cancellation is required due to forecast of severe weather, etc.
 
Pet Policy: No pets, please

Family Safe Policy: Georgia ForestWatch outings are a smoke, alcohol and drug-free setting.
