Restaurant News: Drunken Lobster out, Maison Alyzee pending

Source: Max Hauser

After two years offering shellfish specialties and (more recently) pizza in large NYC-type slices from a compact restaurant space at 212 Castro in Mountain View, Drunken Lobster (hereinafter, "DL") will soon close. I learned that when I stopped there today (to try the pizza for the first time) and saw a beverage-license ownership-change notice in the window, the new owner being Maison Alyzee Corp. and the new business to be named Maison Alyzee.

Chef Brian Langevin (who has been communicative and helpful in the past) was not on site, but the employee I spoke to today, Cristopher, said DL's full menu will continue only through this Sunday (Oct. 15). After that, pizzas, drinks, and French fries will remain available for possibly as long as a month, he said. Christopher did not have much info about the pending replacement Maison Alyzee ("Alyzee House"), but said he had the impression it was to be a French café or possibly bakery.

Until branching out to pizzas (something chef Langevin had plenty of past experience with), DL focused on lobster rolls, shrimp and crab specialties, and fresh oysters. Unluckily for a restaurant with crustacean-centered menu, Drunken Lobster's advent coincided with a sharp lobster price increase, prompting unexpectedly high menu prices for those offerings; and what would have been the restaurant's first season for Dungeness Crab last year was virtually cancelled (and the fishery still curtailed in 2017) due to algae growths that created a biotoxin risk.

For many years Gyros House operated at 212 Castro, supplanted for a few months in 2015 by Pitabite before Chef Langevin opened Drunken Lobster on September 22, 2015.
