60 Second Inspirations
Sydney Sefernick is that girl who is always smiling. But for years it was a forced smile.  She was depressed, fighting anxiety and hating her body as she gained more and  more weight.  A proposal and a new co-worker literally changed her life. Tune in to the local news next Monday, August 7th, to see her powerful "60 Second Inspiration" story.

Power of 10 Winner

Congratulations to Alisa Male, this month's Power of 10 Winner!  Alisa earned herself $10 in BAC Bucks by staying consistent with her fitness and checking in 10+ times at Bay Athletic Club this month.

Despite suffering from fibromyalgia, Alisa makes it a goal to workout at least five days per week at the Club.  She is a mom and loves using BAC's equipment to do her own workouts. She has been losing weight and inches since having her baby Jackson less than a year ago. Jackson is a big fan of the Jungle Gym, our on-site daycare.

Way to go Alisa! We love seeing you (and Jackson) at BAC on a regular basis!

Want to be our next Power of 10 Winner?  Check in at least 10 times at BAC and/or Bay Urban Fitness this month to be eligible!
Community Outreach

Bay Athletic Club was honored to lead some sweaty workouts to raise money for two different local causes last month.

Just in time for the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Sweat for a Cause raised nearly $200 for the Friends of the Sanctuary. We also held a Sweat for a Cause to raise money for Hospice of Michigan.

If you would like BAC to help with your community event or field trip use this form to apply.

Shakeology of the Month
We have a great featured recipe for a warm summer month: Banana Split Shakeology.

Why Shakeology?
We all struggle with food prep and getting all the nutrients we need in life every day. Shakeology solves both of those problems.  It literally fills the gaps in our daily nutrition. We still advocate eating clean, colorful, whole foods for your daily meals. Shakeology is like a multiivataim in a meal, adding to your day.

It is quick, convenient and filled with vitamins, minerals, superfoods, probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, amino acids, antioxidants and protein. It is not a diet shake or a quick fix. It is whole food nutrition.

Need Shakeology at home for YOUR family? FREE shaker cup with purchase!

HEALTHY EATS!
from Kelly Lake
Cumin dusted Quinoa Pilaf with Avocado, Black Beans, Cilantro and Lime

Cilantro, lime and avocado lend a bright finish to the hearty quinoa in this simply yet zesty dish. This versatile side pairs well with seafood, poultry or pork or make it a vegetarian meal by folding the fluff inside two warm corn tortillas. Enjoy!

Ingredients:
2 cups prepared quinoa (white or red)
1 can black beans, drained and rinsed well
1 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. ground chipotle (optional)
1 whole avocado, diced
1 bunch cilantro, chopped
1 lime, juiced and zested (reserve 1 tsp. zest)

Directions:
Cook the quinoa according to the directions, about 15 minutes is all it will take. Set into a large bowl after cooking completely. Dust the quinoa with the ground spices and black beans and toss well. Chop the cilantro after washing well, just the top leafy green section and add to the mix.
Holding onto the half of the avocado, slice long sections into the avocado then create cross hatches. Use a spoon and slip the avocado from it's shell onto the quinoa dish. Add the second half if desired. Juice the lime and toss in 1 tsp. of the zest. Toss gently to avoid mashing the avocado. Serves  4.

From Alpena to Las Vegas, sharing the STORY of fitness.

Fitness is a calling. I am honored to call it my career and my passion. I am celebrating 20 years in the industry this month! I became a group fitness instructor in 1997 right out of college. Best decision ever. I will always be grateful to my first mentor Jill at Prairie Athletic Club in Wisconsin for noticing me and inviting me to teach. Remember hi-lo aerobics? She helped me start there and I continued to grow!  I opened my clubs 11 years ago and have never looked back.

Attending the IDEA World Convention in Las Vegas last week was a highlight of my year. Our fabulous group fitness director Lindsey Bartz attended with me. She was a sponge, soaking it all up. She is going to create great things in this industry and that makes me proud. I presented to studio owners from around the world and emceed the event, even introducing my business mentor, Darren Hardy, best selling author and speaker. It was an honor to put Alpena and BAC on an international platform!

I got to see my fitness and life mentor, Todd Durkin, earn the Jack LaLanne Lifetime Achievement Award and I know that his leadership has helped shape my own path in our community.

I had a chance to listen to some of the top leaders in the industry. I came home more clear in our mission at BAC.
We help people move, eat and think better.
In doing so, we create a happier community.

How? By encouraging small daily choices.
Each choice takes us a step closer OR away from our health.

We have a choice to workout or to skip it for an errand.
We have a choice to pack a lunch or skip it for the drive thru.
We have a choice to listen to personal development or skip it for breaking news headlines.

What can YOU do today?
1. Get in a workout.
You have start or re-start somewhere. Schedule it. Tell people in your life that it matters. Make it as consistent as eating and sleeping.  At BAC, we have 50+ classes to choose from and camps for all levels and schedules. You can meet with a trainer to get a custom workout. Find the right fit!

2. Plan your meals.
Nothing sinks success more than eating mindlessly or resorting to junk food on the fly. We urge you to  invest in your nutrition. Food is fuel. Food is medicine.  At BAC, we promote eating colorful, whole foods, lean meats, healthy fats, lots of fruits and veggies. Grocery shop with a mission. Limit processed foods, fast foods and cut out soda.  We have endorsed Shakeology for 8 years, to complete your day with dense nutrition on-the-go.   Bonus: Drink more water and plan your splurges in advance. *Want more nutritional support? We have your back. Jump in a BAC camp or set up a Getting Started Right Appointment with a trainer.

3. Listen to positivity.
"What we think about comes about." I personally listen and re-listen to Darren Hardy's daily message and Robin Sharm's Mastery Series.  But there are thousands of podcasts and audio books to choose from.  Find something that is uplifting, makes you think and makes you better !  We share our own "Choose Happy" messages on our Bay Athletic Club Facebook page to add positivity to the newsfeed and your life!

Sincerely, Trina Gray, Owner, Bay Athletic Club
