This fall has been a season of change at the Fleet. We welcomed new institutional changes and have seen youth grow and progress in various Fleet programs. Maeve A. is one such student. When we asked her father Chad about Maeve's growing passion for science, he smiled and told us that he went from being "a sports dad to a science dad." Chad has been bringing his daughter to Saturday Science Club since she started middle school. That's more than twelve months of participating in hands-on activities and interacting with local scientists. It's no surprise that these opportunities sparked her enthusiasm for science.

Now that she's a 7th grader, Maeve has her sights set on applying for BE WiSE (Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering), a program for girls in grades 7-12. BE WiSE offers further science learning through activities at places such as UCSD School of Engineering, Biogen Idec Community Lab, CareFusion, and more. It is exciting to know that her passion will continue to be nurtured in BE WiSE.

Last month, we celebrated the launch of our new brand featuring a triangular logo that was chosen to reflect the three pillars of our vision: the Fleet, education and community. You may be surprised to learn that the logo is more than just a visually appealing shape. The design uses perfect symmetry creating a clear center from which possibilities can be explored in all directions. And the triangle is oriented as a forward pointing arrow evoking progress and aspiration. As the centerpiece of our new brand identity, the logo is carrying our story into the world.

Change is also evident in our galleries. Visitors to the Fleet won't recognize the second floor galleries when they visit the new exhibit, The Art of the Brick. Considered a "Global Must-See Exhibition" by CNN, The Art of the Brick comprises incredible art pieces that the artist, Nathan Sawaya, created with LEGO® bricks. He even created a custom sculpture that is unique to San Diego. Here through the end of January, I encourage you to make plans to experience this mesmerizing exhibit.
