Book Reviews
Greeks Bearing Gifts
By Philip Kerr
Reviewed by Rebecca Swope
In his inimitable style, Philip Kerr has once again delivered a tour-de-force in his latest Bernie Gunther novel. Set in 1957, the story enmeshes the reader in the world of Post WWII Europe. A net of intrigue slowly tightens around Bernie, whose new identity of Christof Ganz, an insurance adjuster for a German company, puts him square in the sights of a serial killer. A killer whose MO is hauntingly familiar, both to Bernie and to the local detective, Lt. Leventis.
Collaborating with another is not Bernie's comfort zone, but he manages to discover new information as to the identity of the killer. As he investigates a claim for a sunken ship, Bernie/Christof realizes that they are looking for a former S.S. officer, whose connections to the Nazi regime of the Third Reich had made him immune to prosecution. But no more.
The net tightens, the intrigue deepens, and Bernie/Christof finds that not all friends are friends, not all enemies are enemies, and that sometimes Greeks Bearing Gifts are a good thing.
Highly recommended.

The Neighbor
By Joseph Souza
Reviewed by Cheryl Kravetz
This book has it all: secrets, lies, deception, everything you want in a thriller, topped off with terrifying reality.
Leah and her husband, Clay, move from Seattle to Maine so Clay can realize his dream of owning a brewery. As they settle into their new home, Leah is left alone much of the time since Clay is working long hours to get his business started. Bored, Leah spends her time watching their next door neighbors, Russell and Clarissa Gaines, wishing they could become best friends. She fantasizes about them as she watches from her window. She envisions her twin children playing with the Gaines' children and the couples becoming close friends. But Clarissa and Russell don't seem to be interested in being friends. They are standoffish and distant, offering only a quick, casual wave when necessary.
As Leah's obsession with her neighbors grows, she waits for them to leave for work each morning. Then she sneaks into their house, drinks their wine, handles and sometimes takes their things. She even settles herself on their bed, reading Clarissa's diary. In the diary Leah discovers the Gaines have a connection to a local college girl, a girl who has been reported missing. And they have more secrets, unimaginable secrets. Leah can't seem to tear herself away.
Suspense builds to a frightening fever pitch, making this book impossible to put down. Joseph Souza knows how to keep the story moving and the reader totally hooked! This story stays with the reader long after the last page is finished. And I want to see more from this talented author.

After Anna
By Lisa Scottoline
Reviewed by Stephanie Saxon Levine
A new book by Lisa Scottoline, whether in her series or, as in this case, a standalone, is always an occasion for rejoicing. After Anna is no exception to this rule. This domestic thriller has everything: an empathetic cast of characters, settings that fill the mental movie screen, and a plot that kept this reader enthralled from first page to last.
Maggie and Noah, recently married, seem to have settled happily into their new life. With Noah's young son and the arrival of Maggie's long-lost teenage daughter, their family seems complete. But before they have a chance to revel in their new life together, Maggie's daughter is murdered, and Noah is charged with the crime.
Scottoline, a master storyteller, interweaves Noah's courtroom trial with the events that led up to it. Through the viewpoints of several characters, the author reveals how the joyful life of this very likeable young family deteriorates into guilt and suspicion, and, finally, into huge loss.
I enjoyed everything about After Anna. I recommend it to anyone looking for a suspenseful, entertaining, and unforgettable read. St Martin's Press, 27.99
