Facials Can Be Fatal
By Nancy J. Cohen
Reviewed By Stephanie Saxon Levine
A dead body slathered in a green facial mask in Marla Vail's new day spa sets Marla on a quest to track down suspects and restore her good name. The victim, Valerie Weston, had been a major donor for Friends of Old Florida, a nonprofit historic preservation society. Marla's motivation to find the killer is strengthened by the fact that Marla's stylists are scheduled to work backstage at Friends of Old Florida's upcoming gala fashion show.
Val may have stumbled onto secrets that others would kill to keep. What are the connections between a greedy land developer, a dress designer whose husband may have links to the Asian mob, a mortician who might be involved in the human hair trade, and members of the nonprofit group's board of directors? Marla joins forces with her detective husband to solve a decades-old mystery that includes a secret journal, pirate tales, and shipwrecks along the Florida coast.
I found this latest in Nancy Cohen's Bad Hair Day Mystery Series to be fast paced and enjoyable. The author excels in creating a unique and memorable cast of characters. One of her trademarks is that the mysteries always add to the reader's knowledge in the field related to the mystery. It's a joy to follow along with Marla and Dalton as they put the pieces together to solve the crime. Highly recommended.

Big Eye, a Taiwanese gangster, sends two of his henchmen for his nephew Jing-nan, owner of the Unknown Pleasures food stand in the Taipei Night Market.  Big Eye wants Jing-nan to bring Mei-ling, Big Eye's 16 year old daughter, to Taipei for awhile.  Mei-ling is rebellious and spoiled, under the influence of her unsavory boyfriend.  Big Eye hopes that Jing-nan can set her on a right path.
Jing-nan has no leverage.  He is being monitored by Big Eye's goons and manipulated by Mei-ling.  Problems begin before they even return to Taipei.   As the story evolves Jing-nan realizes that his cousin's visit involves more than just babysitting a troublesome teenager.  The action escalates as the big secret underlying Mei-ling's problem comes to the surface.
Incensed is about an entertaining cast of characters operating in a fascinating setting.  The culture of the Taipei Night Market and food stands is authentic-and mouth watering.  The sights and smells permeate every chapter of the book.  The characters are instrumental in portraying life in Taiwan, including the strong family obligations and respect for the rules governing those relationships.
Mr. Lin is an accomplished writer, expertly giving the reader a mystery laced with a fine sense of humor.  Incensed is the second book in the Taipei Night Market series.  The book may be read without reading Ghost Month, the first book in the series.  However, this reader missed the first book and looks forward to reading it.  A very enjoyable read.Soho First Printing, Signed:26.95

A Pinch of Poison
By Alyssa Maxwell
Reviewed by Stephanie Saxon Levine
In this second in Alyssa Maxwell's Lady and Lady's Maid series, set in post-World War I England, Lady Phoebe Renshaw and her lady's maid, Eva Huntford, encounter an uncharitable killer at a charity luncheon sponsored by a posh school for girls. The Haverleigh School's headmistress, Miss Finch, succumbs to a poison-laced dessert. While the girls at Haverleigh all come from highly respected families, none of them, or the members of the staff, are excluded from suspicion. Lady Phoebe focuses on the students while Eva centers her efforts on the staff. The result is a most enjoyable, entertaining, and suspenseful mystery.
Alyssa Maxwell is adept at weaving a fascinating historical tale, and she more than amply demonstrates that skill here. She has chosen a time and place in which the world was changing swiftly for women. The old roles were shifting, and the members of various generations and social castes adapted in different ways. The author captures this state of flux very well indeed. Her characters are fully realized, the depiction of setting nicely done, and the plot, with its twists and turns, compelling.
All in all, a most delightful read. I look forward to more mysteries in this series.

Most Dangerous Place: A Jack Swyteck Novel
By James Grippando
Reviewed by Cheryl Kravetz
I discovered this wonderfully talented author in 1994 with his first book, The Pardon, in which he introduced Miami Attorney Jack Swyteck, and I have read every one of his books since then. I thought he was a uniquely talented writer in 1994 and he has only gotten better as is obvious in his newest, his 25th legal thriller, Most Dangerous Place.
According to the FBI, the most dangerous place for a woman between the ages of twenty and thirty is in a relationship with a man. Those statistics become all too personal when Jack Swyteck takes on a new client tied to his past.
Jack's long-time friend, Keith Ingraham and his wife, Isabelle, are flying from their home in Hong Kong where Keith is a high-powered banker to Miami where surgeons are waiting to help their daughter hear again. Jack goes to the airport to pick them up but as they disembark the plane, Isabelle is arrested, accused of conspiring to murder a man who sexually assaulted her years before while she was in college.
Jack works as Isabelle's attorney to learn the facts of the case, but as he interviews Isabelle and others, he discovers some very different and complicated stories.
Most Dangerous Place is inspired by a real case in which the victim of rape is sent to prison for the death of her attacker.
I especially like James Grippando's thrillers as he keeps readers guessing to the very end.

The Magdalen Girls
By V.S. Alexander
Reviewed by Ruth Morris
Dublin, 1962.Within the gated grounds of the convent of The Sisters of the Holy Redemption lies one of the city's Magdalen Laundries. The laundries have evolved into grim workhouses. Most of the young women who live there are ordinary girls whose only sin is being too pretty, too tempting to men.Sixteen-year-old Teagan Tiernan, one such girl, was sent by her family because beauty tempted a young priest.
Nora Craven, and Teagen become friends. The girls are given new names and denied contact with the outside world. Finally, Nora and Teagan find an ally in Lea, who helps them plot an escape. But the outside world has dangers too, especially for young women with soiled reputations.

I had seen a movie about the Magdalen Laundries several years ago, set in an earlier time period. This novel, set in the very year I graduated from high school, gave me new insight into how crushing life was for the sad young women in the laundry. Despite the contrasts between their lives and mine, it was easy to empathize with Teagan, Nora and Lea. Other characters, all well drawn though not all empathetic, include the Mother Superior, Sister Anne. The descriptions of the surroundings enhance the reader's engagement in this book.
The Magdalen Girls is a novel well worth reading, whether or not the reader knows about the Laundries and their terrible history. I highly recommend it. Kensington Signed: 15.00

When Mia views a photograph of the crime scene and spots the number "1" carved into the dead girl's fingernail, she knows this is only the beginning. Could this killer have something to do with a missing child, abducted six years ago and never found, or with the reclusive religious community hidden in the nearby woods?

Mia returns to duty to track down a revenge-driven and ruthlessly intelligent killer. But when Munch's own six-year-old granddaughter goes missing, Mia realizes that the killer's sinister game is personal, and I'm Traveling Alone races to an explosive-and shocking-conclusion.
