A Personal Note from Susan

Those closest to me have heard me speak of my semi-retirement for several years now.  Now that we have successfully sold our home, I thought it appropriate to share with you a bit more of the details.  My hope is that you will be inspired to begin planning your own semi-retirement, if indeed that is the future you desire.

WHO: My Prince Charming and I will be entering a new phase of our life in 2018.  My husband has given formal notice to his employer of more than thirty years and will retire 3.30.2018.   He's in a highly technical position and as a courtesy wanted to provide plenty of notice for the transition.

WHAT:  Semi-retirement for us will be when my husband fully retires, and I maintain my primary Canadian client, and perhaps a select few private high-level clients.  I've been consciously winding down my Lighthouse Marketing clients over the previous several years.  Although I will maintain my agency, with the DBA of Tap Into Your Center, I will not be making any efforts to add new business.

WHERE:  This coming winter will be our last in Central New York.  With the sale of our home, we will rent locally for one more year, so that our youngest daughter can complete her High School education and prepare for college next Fall.  We will be spending six months each year at our camp on the St. Lawrence River, and six months down south in Charleston, SC, Kiawah to be more precise.  We've been vacationing in Kiawah annually for the past seven years.

HOW:  Perhaps the most important question and one that I hope will provide some insights and inspiration for your planning is how we made this happen.  I recall like it was yesterday, sitting on our deck at camp, looking at the river back in 2008.  My Prince Charming and I had just married and we were thinking about how much we wanted to spend more time together.  We were in our 40's and wanted to create a plan that would allow us to spend more time together sooner than later.  Here are some highlights to our plan:
  • Our priority would be to continue raising our four children as independent, self-reliant and successful young adults.  We would share our plan with them early so that they would adjust over time and not be shocked.  We agreed to assist each of them in attending the college of their choice.  We would financial be responsible for year one, we would co-sign for year two and they would pay that year back, and year 3 & 4 they would have to figure out on their own.  So far this has worked successfully with our two eldest children, two more to go!

  • We would itemize all of our debt and create a plan to have it all paid in full before our semi-retirement year of 2018.  This commitment had a big impact on our day to day decisions of what to purchase, where to go on vacations, what improvements to make in our home or camp.  Every financial decision was based on holding this commitment as a highest priority.

  • Invest in our retirement savings and manage the funds to the best of our ability.  Although we have retained the services of financial advisors over the years, as we got closer, Prince Charming has since taking this important activity under his own wings.  He has consistently read studies and sought council in an effort to manage our funds successfully!
We had one other overriding belief and life philosophy that has truly benefited us.  We agreed to enjoy every second of the last ten years.  We didn't want to live only for this plan and miss out on the joys of raising our family, making tough financial decisions, and working smart.  Throughout it all, we were there to support each other whenever one of us felt challenged, tired of living on such a tight budget or pessimistic.

None of this has been easy, but it will definitely be worth it!!

Much love,

What Does it Mean to Live a Conscious Life?

I am so excited to be sharing with you the concepts presented in
Quantum Leaps - 7 Skills for Workplace ReCreation by Charlotte Shelton.

Over the next several months, I intend to share with you in more detail,  The Seven Quantum Skills that will enable you to see the world in a new way .   This month we explore the Quantum Skill of  Quantum Acting : The ability to act responsibly!

Quantum Acting is the ability to act with concern for the whole - the whole self, the whole society, the whole planet.  Using Quantum Acting means that we choose to make responsible choices by contemplating the consequences of our actions.
Living a conscious life means that we live with conscious awareness of our values and a clear intention to act in ways that are congruent with them.  This, of course, takes energy and commitment.

Each conscious choice that we make not only influences the probability of our future choices; it also, because of our quantum interconnectedness, affects everyone else's future choices as well.  So, we design our lives and our workplaces one choice at a time.  If we take the time daily to do whatever we need to do to be in resonance with this complex whole, we can then at any time access deep intuition, and, subsequently, live lives of spontaneity and responsibility.

Prayer and meditation are proven processes for bringing us into resonance with the quantum field.  They are not substitutes for action, but they enable us to align our actions with the greater good.

Stay tuned for the August issue of my Co-Creator's Corner, where I will expand on the sixth Quantum Skill - Quantum Trusting - The ability to trust life.

This month I'd like to give a shout out and recommendation to a local colleague and friend, Tim Smith.  Tim is the Creator of
www.Smile-Therapy.com where he curates and sends out via daily emails messages of hope, humor and just plain fun.  I've been a subscriber of Smile Therapy for many years, and I can't tell you how many times his message is exactly what I needed to read to reframe my mindset or to just put a smile on my face.  Here's a brief video of Tim telling you in his own words why you, like hundreds of others may want to learn more about Smile Therapy.

A Thought to Ponder

"Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now. Don't wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it's at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savored."
