SB 22 (Beall) needs your help! When enacted, it will significantly help people who seek insurance parity for behavioral health problems. SB 22 requires health plans and insurers to submit an annual report to state regulators certifying compliance with state and federal mental health parity laws.
Placing the responsibility on insurers and health plans is a meaningful change from the current situation. At this time, the responsibility is on the patient to know the law and to go through the process of making a complaint if it is not followed.
SB 22 has one last committee to get through and it is a major one: the Assembly Appropriations Committee sometime next week. Then it must survive a vote on the floor of the Assembly before the end of August. Finally, it only becomes law if Governor Brown signs it.
