NAPA open training sessions

NAPA appreciates the challenge that the care sector faces of providing meaningful activities to the ever increasing frail, dependant individual, one who may also be living with dementia. Also to provide an "outstanding" service is the aim of every care setting, not an easy task but with the right guidance, achievable.
With this in mind NAPA has developed a training day, specifically aimed at the activity coordinator, care staff, and management staff. The morning session (9.30am - 12.30pm) will concentrate on adapting activities for different abilities and the afternoon session (1.00-4pm) will explore best practice around CQC quality ratings and activity provision.  Come for one or both sessions the choice is yours! We only have 30 places at each session, so get your applications in quickly to avoid disappointment.
The cost per session will be £30 per person (NAPA members rate) or £100 per person (Non members rate).

'Summer's here at last, have you been out enjoying the weather or do you find it hard to make the most of the outside. Do you feel you don't have enough time, people or a nice enough garden to use it more?

Our research project investigated why care home's, particularly for dementia, don't use their gardens more, even when it may have been designed to the latest guidance. This project had surprising results showing that the role of a care settings culture has far more influence than the amount of money, people or the design of the garden.

We support care settings in understanding what is actually getting in the way of greater engagement outside and support a journey to greater person-centred care, and more meaningful engagement with the outside for residents and staff.

We do this through:
1.        Our workshop 'Why don't we go into the garden?'
which we can run in your care home or if you can get a group together we can arrange an open event near you. This workshop is also a recognised CPD course with NAPA, see our courses page,  here,  for course outcomes and how to book.
2.        Our diagnostic tool, 'Care Culture Map & Handbook' is a tool that will help you locate what is hindering your engagement, and like any good map, helps you work out how to overcome it and plan your route forward. It also supports you in using outside specialists, like Garden Designers, cost effectively if you need to make more major changes. This tool supports long term culture change, overcoming many myths around needing more 'things' for the garden or more people to make it an integral part of the lives of residents in care. This tool is available via our website or via NAPA's shop where they will receive a donation for each purchase.

Virtual reality seaside adventures and vivid jewellery: Kingston University graduates use design to raise awareness and help people with dementia

A Kingston University graphic design graduate has used virtual reality to bring the sights and sounds of the seaside to life, to help people with dementia reconnect with their history and stimulate memories.
Emily McLoughlin Smith created a virtual reality audio visual programme with an ageing population in mind. "My project Virtually Seaside is a holiday experience designed specifically for older people with dementia," she said. "Virtual reality technology has the ability to take you anywhere in the world from the comfort of your own home - I wanted to make it more accessible for people who can't venture that far anymore."
