Smokin' Fish Screening in New Mexico | |
Smokin' Fish will be screening at the 11th Annual Native Cinema Showcase on Sunday, August 21 at the Cultural Center, New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The screening will be held at 4 p.m.
About Smokin' Fish:
Cory Mann (Tlingit) is a quirky businessman hustling to make a dollar in Juneau, Alaska. He gets hungry for smoked salmon--and decides to spend a summer smoking fish at a family's traditional fish camp. The unusual story of his life and the untold history of his people interweave with the process of preparing traditional food as he struggles to pay his bills and keep his business afloat.
Recent Awards:
A BIG congrats goes out to Cory Mann, Luke Griswold-Tergis and the entire crew of Smokin' Fish because the film just won the Best Documentary Award from Montreal's Séquences Magazine.

$15,000. That was the magic number I had come up with. My documentary, LaDonna Harris: Indian 101 had come to a complete hault when my funds dried-up and I needed to get it finished. I estimated that I needed $50,000 to deliver the final cut to submit for Public Television, but it seemed impossible to try to raise that amount in 30 days, so I decided to go for a more reasonable $15,000. I saw the success my other filmmaker friends had with their fundraising campaigns on Kickstarter.com and thought I'd go for it. Here's how it all went down...

NAPT to Host Workshop in Santa Fe
on August 19 | |
NAPT--with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, in partnership with the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), Working Films and the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI)--is pleased to present a day-long workshop entitled "Media for Change: Documentary Film in Education and Social Issues" for educators and media makers on August 19, 2011, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
This invitation-only event will allow for educators and media makers to brainstorm and engage in hands-on techniques in their respective groups and then culminate in a group discussion led by a panel of presenters.

Cherokee filmmaker Heather Rae's new feature documentary, Family: The First Circle, shares the stories of families in Idaho struggling with drug abuse, the foster care system and the intrinsic human need for family. First Circle incorporates multiple perspeciteves from law enforcement officers, foster home parents and family stories, including Rae's family, to provide an expansive look at the foster care system and families dealing with drug addiction.
