NAPT Welcomes Multimedia Intern

Blue Tarpalechee

Blue Tarpalechee (Muskogee Creek) has accepted a summer internship with Native American Public Telecommunications, Inc. (NAPT). The twenty-five-year-old, 4.0 student at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, N.M., is a double major in creative writing and new media: moving images. He grew up in Okmulgee, Okla.

In his new role as Multimedia Intern, Blue will serve as a project assistant, producing online video content that will aid in NAPT's mission to share Native stories with the world. Utilizing his skill-set of writing, shooting and editing, Blue will travel regionally and document current opportunities and community-wide involvement in furthering Tribal efforts. In addition to producing content for NAPT this summer, he will also take part in relevant training and public presentations.

Assistant Director Heads to Milwaukee

Milwaukee, Wisc., is the location for this year's National Congress of American Indians' (NCAI) mid-year conference, June 13-16. NAPT Assistant Director Georgiana Lee (Navajo) will be attending the event, as well as serving on a social media workshop panel. The conference explores the diversity of Native cultures and the range of opportunities to strengthen economies and communities.

Executive Director to Attend AmeriCorps VISTA Training Event

NAPT Executive Director Shirley K. Sneve (Rosebud Sioux) will be in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area to attend a training workshop by AmeriCorps VISTA, June 20-24. AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service designed specifically to fight poverty. VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year at a non-profit organization or local government agency. NAPT was recently selected as a non-profit that will will work with the AmeriCorps VISTA program.

NAPT Presence at the 2011 National

Rural Assembly

NAPT Executive Director Shirley K. Sneve (Rosebud Sioux) and Multimedia Intern Blue Tarpalechee (Muskogee Creek) will be attending the 2011 National Rural Assembly Gathering June 28-30 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Rural leaders and advocates from across the country will gather to build a stronger voice for rural America. The conference will educate policymakers and other leaders on issues prevalent in rural policy among many other objectives including the creation of opportunities for participants to make connections that will forward their work on rural policy issues.

Christine Lesiak & Princella Parker

 

Standing Bear's Footsteps, the new historical documentary by Christine Lesiak and Princella Parker (Omaha), tells the story of one of America's original civil rights activists, Ponca Chief Standing Bear.

 

"The film is about what it means to be a person as told through the life of a Ponca Indian Chief, and his struggle to be free," said Lesiak.

 

It is the first documentary to tell the story of Standing Bear's life and activism work for Native American rights in America. The film presents his story through historical reenactments, photographs, film footage and interviews.
